Thanks in advance for all your help and for volunteering to help so many people! I usually disinfect my own computers and even do it for others, but this one has me stumped. My parents have a dual boot Vista/Ubuntu Natty PC and the Vista portion came down with an email-based virus. My sister’s email account was compromised and her account sent out infected emails to all of her contacts. The original email said the sender wanted you to click on a funny picture hosted at SnappyPants, if that helps. After clicking on the email link my parent’s computer started popping up “Security Alert” messages. It told them there was a virus and they were being attacked by a certain IP address. It also said they only had the free version of Microsoft Security Center (or Essentials) and to kill the virus they needed to pay for an upgrade to the full version. IE would flicker to an all black screen (which has me suspicious that remote access was taking place). There were constant “Security Alert” messages that would prevent them from going to security based websites (MBAM, Spybot SD, SAS, HJT, etc) and downloading files. A message would read that “your security settings are preventing you from…” either going to a web site or downloading a file. When I was able to download files, it would act as though it didn’t know what to do with an .exe file. I scanned the pc with many of the tools you use regularly on this site and only came up with one registry value that was doing something with .exe files. I can’t remember if it was MBAM, SAS, or Spybot, but after the program tried to fix the registry error, no exe’s would work. I lost patience and just reinstalled Vista.
Now, it is not giving the “you have a virus and need to upgrade” message, but it is still giving the “Security Alert, your security settings are preventing you from…” messages. I have reset the IE settings and even put the sites on as trusted, to no avail. I have figured out why the .exe’s won’t work. It changes the name from .exe to _exe and thus no extension - so no file association telling Vista which program to use for the application. When I rename the file to .exe it works fine. I went to Kaspersky’s site to download their virus removal tools and as soon as the download was complete, the file just disappears. I suspect a root-kit or virus hiding in the MBR or partition but haven’t been able to find it with tools designed just for doing just that. The security alerts happen much more frequently when connected to the internet. If I disable the network connection they don’t appear nearly as much. I have looked through your site and others and found several Security Alert type infections, but the corrective actions have not worked. I haven’t found any that change .exe to _exe. I have downloaded and run Defogger & DDS, and am anxiously, but patiently, awaiting your instructions.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

****************** Java Issues ********************

As far as the Java is concerned I am having problems. At first, it wouldn't let me download Java. I could watch it in the download folder as it was downloading, but when it would hit 100% it just disappears. I figured it was the name or extension of the file that something didn't like so I downloaded again changing the file name and extension to 7.7 and it let me download it. When I went to uninstall Java it gave me an error. When I click on uninstall a Windows Installer Service window opens and shows activity. Then a User Account Control windows opens saying, "An Unidentified Program wants access to your computer", and shows Java 1.6.0.7 in the details. When I click allow an error appears saying,"Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

***************** MBAM *********************
I will run Malwarebytes as requested, as soon as I send this post.

Thanks again for all of your help!

Just a quick update,

Malwarebytes did not come up with anything either on Quick or Full scan. I had a Java icon appear so I let it do an online update to 6.26. 6.07 is still installed though.

Thanks again for all of your help!

Hi!

It looks like Java has been updated again.

Lets update it again.

Java Outdated

Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform:
    [list]
  • 32-bit Select: Windows x86 Offline.
  • 64-bit Select: Windows x64.
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

NEXT

Then run this tool afterwards to try and get rid of Java 6.07

After updating to Java7, I ran the Msicuu2 program and it didn't uninstall the jre6_07. So I tried to uninstall it and came up with the same error. So just out of curiosity, I tried to install the version I installed the other night, 6_26, and that version uninstalled with no problem. So I now have Java7 & Java6_07. Do you think that is where the virus is hiding? I await your recommendations on how to proceed.

Thanks once again!

Hi!

Do you think that is where the virus is hiding?

No. It's just Java being Java and being a pain to get rid of.

Try this utility to remove the outdated Java.

RevoUninstaller
Download and install Revo Uninstaller
  • Double click the Revo Uninstaller icon on your desktop to start the program
  • Scroll through the listed programs and Right Click on the program you wish to uninstall
  • From the pop out menu choose Uninstall
  • Click Yes to the confirmation dialogue
  • In the next window select the Advanced mode
  • Click Next to start uninstalling the program
  • Answer Yes to confirm the uninstall
  • When the program has completed the four steps, click Next to allow the program to search for leftovers
  • Once complete, click Next, then Finish
  • Repeat the above steps for any other programs you wish to remove.

It took several tries, but the old Java is finally gone! Any ideas on what to try next?

Sorry it took so long, I was trying to replicate the problems. So far,not much has changed. I haven't seen it change .exe into _exe in a while. When you had me update Java by downloading it, my download stopped immediately for no reason (on firefox). I have to click "retry" to finish the download. Something is trying to prevent downloads. I can download pdf's, mp3's, etc and there is no interruption; it downloads just fine. When it is a file from certain helpful sites like SAS, Mbam, Spybot, etc, it will stop me, and when I retry I can watch it download into the download folder... 50%...75%...98% then when it is finished the file just vanishes. I have to download these types of files from another pc and burn them on a disk. In IE, when trying to download from these helpful sites, it will give me a "your security profile won't allow you to download this file" error message. Something is definitely trying to prevent me from downloading certain files and especially from certain sites (like the ones that will help get rid of spyware). This is some residual activity from some Fake Security Alert virus, that is still occurring even after I reinstalled Vista. Any other ideas?
