Hi. I am so utterly defeated and frustrated; I'd been having search redirect issues for weeks. I use Windows 7 Home Premium. Two days ago I got the Windows 7 Recovery virus, which turned my desktop black and hid many of my icons & files. I thought I'd removed it with Malwarebytes (fake security notices stopped). However, upon rebooting my desktop was still black, and files were still missing, and everything from All Programs shows up as (empty).
Upon prompting I also updated to the newest version of Malwarebytes, but subsequent attempts at updating often resulted in error messages.

What I've done since then:
- Downloaded and run the version of RKill (iExplore.exe) linked in the manual, though I had a previous version already on my desktop.
- Tried to run TDSS- as per the manual I moved it to my desktop and renamed it to 123.com, but after the message confirming if I want to run the program, nothing happens.
- Tried to uninstall some out of date programs like Adobe, only to get the blue screen again.
- Attempts to run full scans in Malwarebytes also resulted in blue screen. I was able to run a full scan this afternoon, however, though it came up clean.
- Changed folder viewing options in My Computer, so now most files have reappeared, but I can't access any programs from Start Menu

My Videos/My Pictures/My Music folders now have padlock symbols on them and I receive "Access is denied" messages. Also most files appear faded.

I'm completely new to posting logs, should I post the most recent one from Malwarebytes or go back to the last time an an infection was found?

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
    Because of this, you must reply within three days
    failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
    Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

~~~
As for my computer, the Google redirection has become more even more aggressive. My desktop background is still black. I can't run TDSS without getting a blue screen, nor uninstall programs from Control Panel. My Start Menu is still missing programs, and all program file folders still show up as "(empty)".
Random files have appeared on my desktop/My Documents: Windows 7 Recovery, Windows 7 Upgrade Advisory, desktop.ini and random registry files. I did use Unhide, which helped with most of my files, though a few still appear faded and there are lock symbols on the shortcuts for My Pictures and My Music folders.
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
I wasn't prompted to reboot after runningGooredFix so I didn't. I hope that's okay.
Hi!
That's fine.
Please let me know how things are running in your next reply.
ComboFix Script
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:
Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:
Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')
KillAll::
Driver::
bghejtli
File::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\bghejtli.sys
Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')
Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"
Here's how to do that:
1.Click File;
2.Click Save As... Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save ...
Posted Image
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. If ComboFix prompts you to update to the newest version, please allow it to do so. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
I'm relieved to see that most of my programs are back! :clapping: The Start Menu quick launch is still missing programs however.
The "Run" option is not available on the start menu :(
I also don't see a folder or the shortcuts for Internet Explorer; I had to use the "Open with" feature to run.
Redirect with Google is still a problem-even more aggressive than ever.
The odd "My Pictures", etc shortcut folders that appeared in My Documents folder still give me "access is denied" messages upon clicking. Also, it seems as though some functions are missing from Control Panel; I can't change the settings I need to run Remote Desktop Connection, for example, but I don't know if that's due to the malware.
Hi!
I'm relieved to see that most of my programs are back! The Start Menu quick launch is still missing programs however.
What is missing from Quick Launch?
The "Run" option is not available on the start menu
See this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-happened-to-the-Run-command
I also don't see a folder or the shortcuts for Internet Explorer; I had to use the "Open with" feature to run.
See this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945402
Redirect with Google is still a problem-even more aggressive than ever.
Try doing the following:
Running TDSSKiller
Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
    Posted Image
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
    Posted Image
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
    Posted Image
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
    Posted Image
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
Hi. I followed those tutorials successfully, thank you.
There were just misc. programs missing (I think) but I can add those manually now.
Bad news: I can't run TDSSKiller. At all. I followed the instructions and after clicking, but I only the "Do you want the following program to make changes to your computer" confirmation message but after that nothing happens :(
ugh.. It's not going to play nice.
Run this custom scan with OTL for me:
OTL Custom Scan
We need to create a new OTL Report
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Click on the NONE button at the top.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    volsnap.sys
    atapi.sys
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • One report will open, copy and paste it in a reply here:
  • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
I think the easiest way to go at this is by doing so via an External Environment. Do you have a USB drive that we could use to do this?
If so, please do the following:
Try this please. You will need a USB drive.
Download http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-xpud-windows-latest.exe & http://noahdfear.net/downloads/bootable/xPUD/xpud-0.9.2.iso to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Insert your USB drive
  • Press Start > My Computer > right click your USB drive > choose Format > Quick format
  • Double click the unetbootin-xpud-windows-387.exe that you just downloaded
  • Press Run then OK
  • Select the DiskImage option then click the browse button located on the right side of the textbox field.
  • Browse to and select the xpud-0.9.2.iso file you downloaded
  • Verify the correct drive letter is selected for your USB device then click OK
  • It will install a little bootable OS on your USB device
  • Once the files have been written to the device you will be prompted to reboot ~ do not reboot and instead just Exit the UNetbootin interface
  • After it has completed do not choose to reboot the clean computer simply close the installer
  • Next download http://noahdfear.net/downloads/driver.sh to your USB
  • Remove the USB and insert it in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer
  • Press F12 and choose to boot from the USB
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Remove the USB drive and insert back in your working computer and navigate to report.txt
    Please note - all text entries are case sensitive
Copy and paste the report.txt for my review
Hi. Sorry, if this is a silly question: Do I need another computer besides the infected one I'm using now? The instructions say "clean computer"...
Also, I accidentally clicked a Google search link and once was redirected...something, I think 'json', tried to download itself to my computer. I closed it as fast as I could, but when ran Malwarebytes to be sure, I got the update error message.. I won't have to start the entire removal process over again, will I?
