A United Nations report said Friday that disconnecting people from the internet is a human rights violation and against international law.

The report railed against France and the United Kingdom, which have passed laws to remove accused copyright scofflaws from the internet. It also protested blocking internet access to quell political unrest

And then, several hours later:

Starting at 3:35 UTC today (6:35am local time), approximately two-thirds of all Syrian networks became unreachable from the global Internet. Over the course of roughly half an hour, the routes to 40 of 59 networks were withdrawn from the global routing table.

The Syrian shutdown was not in response to the UN report, but rather to the growing unrest in that country.

I have to agree with the UN about the violation of disconnecting the internet from people. I would not last a day without the internet, that is why my mobile has 250mb internet access.

OMG whatever did people do before the internet. Are we really so pathetic, that we cant go on about our lives without it? Where I come from, having the internet is an extra, a want not a necessity or a "right" and I agree with the UK, if someone is using the internet to break the law, take the internet away from them. Even if the "internet" is a right, well guess what, americans can lose rights like voting or the ability to own a gun, by breaking the law. So whats so wrong with taking away the "right" of internet when people break the law using the internet?

Another good reason for the USA to give 105 billion in support

Notice the similarity between BlackSpyder's avatar: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic362616.html

and the_patriot11's: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic397068.html

Hence the confusion. :)
