Hello BleepingComputer.

I'm currently running through some mud with my friends computer that I come to play on alot. It's very sluggish in the following aspects:

1. Shut down time is slightly harsh.
2. My whole comp here freezes at times, and it's too often.
3. The internet speed here fluctuates, although I'm not sure if that's unusual. I'm not too understanding of the concept of broadband, or what particular connection I have, or it's speed.
4. My games and everything take up minimal memory and CPU, but still have horrible lagging, even things offline just freeze up.

I'm hoping to solve this issue soon enough... I really like the game I play... I could play it here before much faster than now.

Enclosed are the following that you requested... [DDS logs, and the GMER Log which worked fine the second time]:

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Thank you for your reply, Tech... Do you mind if I use that name? D:

The reply is much faster than I've had before on different occasions with my other computer so don't sweat it at all kind sir.

To Note: OTL looked frozen with a white screen, so I waited it out seeing as that usually indicates a non respondent... [I liek talking techie.] UnHooker gave me a bad sign with something involving the volsnap driver/service... I'm not too aware about what it is but I'm pretty sure it's a very commonly used part of almost any Windows PC. x.x Sounds like it at least.

Despite your warnings... I did actually accidentally run a malware scan... Too many things to mention were a result with Malwarebytes. over 200 semi-mentionable items... This isn't my PC but I want to be able to play on it... so...

My game-play is getting smoother... But this has happened before on other PCs... I always get paranoid that perhaps viruses and etc know when you're trying to be smart and they try in return to act... Kind. :\ Is that sometimes the case?

My comp is heavily fragmented but only 2x%... I know that's a lot though, so if told I'll de-frag it... Is UltimateDefrag reliable? I use it alot back home.

All in all, It's getting oddly smoother... but it still lags everywhere. The consistency has gone from molasses to... um, well, cream cheese. Getting there... I don't know why though.

I'll enclose the logs as they come, OTL keeps on getting stuck at my firefox settings... It also concerns me. I've just looked online about the variants of Volsnap rootkits and I don't like what I see... I had a scare recently, about a year ago or two with a possible virut on my own comp... I noticed then that my anti-virus was actually picking up GAMEMON from the system folder because my game's hackshield used to be GameGuard...

Also, after hunting a bit I've found that files on my usbs here tend to be ridiculously high in CPU usage. I learned that the SYSTEM process can be horrifically mutated by faulty... Drivers... So I re-installed my USB drivers here... Before learning I don't have ps2 ports. I had safe mode though so WHEW.

Sadly that didn't help. I'm beginning to think somehow that volsnap's possible alteration may be everything I'm experiencing... It IS a driver after all, it could be upping the system process.

Here's the log I could pull up... If I need to actually post the log text itself, lemme know.

Hi!

:)

Yeah, VolSnap.sys is a legitimate file that is needed, and we often see that it gets patched by malware.

Despite your warnings... I did actually accidentally run a malware scan... Too many things to mention were a result with Malwarebytes. over 200 semi-mentionable items... This isn't my PC but I want to be able to play on it... so...

Do you have that log file?

My game-play is getting smoother... But this has happened before on other PCs... I always get paranoid that perhaps viruses and etc know when you're trying to be smart and they try in return to act... Kind. :\ Is that sometimes the case?

To a degree yes.

My comp is heavily fragmented but only 2x%... I know that's a lot though, so if told I'll de-frag it... Is UltimateDefrag reliable? I use it alot back home.

I've never used UltimateDefrag, so not exactly sure if it's that reliable.

I had a scare recently... About a year ago or two with a possible virut on my own comp... I noticed then that my anti-virus was actually picking up GAMEMON from the system folder because my game's hackshield used to be GameGuard...

Okay.

Here's the log I could pull up... If I need to actually post the log text itself, lemme know.

See snippet from intro speech:

Hi!

OTL's still having issues, even though the computer is now becoming much faster... I don't see hangs in that much areas anymore, in fact the lag is almost solved! It still hangs at "firefox Settings". Could it be because I'm using firefox?

If you have Firefox open will running the OTL scan, then yes, that's probably the reason it's having issues. You'll need to close out of Firefox.

The main infection that you were infected with is called TDL3.

See the snippet of text below:

Special thanks to quietman7 for providing the above links.

Posted Image One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan and password stealer.

This type of infection allows hackers to access and remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it contains any other sensitive information, then from a clean computer, change all passwords where applicable.
It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to appraise them of your situation.

I highly suggest you take a look at the two links provided below:
1. How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud?
2. When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

Try to close out of Firefox, and then run the scan with OTL.

Hi!

It's been several days since I last posted instructions for you to complete. Do you still require assistance in getting your computer cleaned up?

Please Note: Unless notified in advance, threads with no response in 3 days get closed.

Thanks,
SweetTech.

I apologize for the delay. Again, this is my friend's comp and I'm only here certain times of the week... x.x

I'll try again with OTL, and if I can edit, I'll do so, if not, I'll double post. Thank you for the grace period and the quick reply... I may be gone an entire week if I do so happen to come across travel issues... Although it's very slim of a possibility, I may need more than 5 days, so I'd have to make a new post.

I'm going to try to be here as much as I can to fix this with you, as rules are defiantly rules... I can't possibly fathom how busy you are.

Also, I figure since this isn't my computer, cleaning is the best option. That way I don't have to redo everything and ask to re-format. I don't have the space here for a disk I think... If I do I can't burn it. And I don't have a XP disc handy. A backdoor left open is a risk I'll have to take for now.

Is there ever truly going to be a way to perfectly seal backdoors once they open? Is it too far in the future to tell exactly? I see several posts here that end up with a backdoor... So it should definitely be something the head techs of the world should have been starting to solve... Unless there's no possible way.

Off-Topic: I've come here two times for two different computers... It's far time I add my avatar here to show support and thanks... This isn't a 7 but that will definitely do. It isn't part of the help, but as a... Human and not a computer technician, could you rate it if you have time?

Okay. If you need more time to run the scans that's fine, as long as I know you're still with me and haven't abandoned the thread, it's all good. I'll await your next reply.

http://www.host4images.com/images/271OTL_Lag.bmp

It's always sticking there, even without Firefox on. I already saw that safelist was one before I even started, so I left it on... Is there anything off in the settings that could cause it to tang an obsene time? what should I do at this point? It still isn't working.

Oh, and if you can't look at the bmp due to policys,

OTL by OldTimer - Version 3.2.24.0 (Not Responding)

Run Scan
Scan all users: On
Standard Output
All six areas: Use Safe List [It was default]
File age: 30 days
Use Company-Name WhiteList: No
Skip Microsoft Files: No
Use No-Company-Name WhiteList: Yes
Files Created Within: File Age
Files Modified Within: File Age
LOP Check: No
Purity Check: No
Custom Scans/Fixes: N/A

And it hangs on "Scanning Firefox settings..."

EDIT: Should it be at 99% CPU usually? It is, however the computer isn't suffering from it elsewhere... Very odd.

Hi!

Please exit out of the OTL window. Not sure what is going on with that.

Would you mind trying to boot into Safe mode and try running OTL there to see if it produces a log for you?

If it doesn't please do the following:

Scanning with DDS

Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------

Please include the following logs in your thread:
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt & Attach.txt reports in your next reply.

I'll still do that if you want, but I just got OTL to work... x.x My Tune-up utilitys provided me with the info that VLN or something wasn't set up properly and may have me vulnerable to hackers so I fixed it. x.x I've used the program before so I trust it.

Glad to hear that you were able to get OTL to run. Out of curiosity how did you get it to run?

Also did you name the user on this computer after NCIS the T.V. show?

Running ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • IMPORTANT - Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the ComboFix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Hi!

It's been several days since I last posted instructions for you to complete. Do you still require assistance in getting your computer cleaned up?

Please Note: Unless notified in advance, threads with no response in 3 days get closed.

If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave & if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have abandoned your topic.

Thanks,
SweetTech.

I'm back.

Again, I have no way to get here every day, this is a friend's computer. Please do take that into consideration if you need to post a warning again... At least acknowledge this isn't my home-place... I'm not mad... I'm just a bit... Well, I'm just saying, that's all.

No problem with that... Anyway, I got OTL to work by... Leaving it open whilist it wasn't responding. In about 5 Hours it finished... Though it was tedious to wait. I did play around on the web though. I noticed now that you said that if it looked frozen or whatnot, it takes time. I apologize.

My friend had/has [dunno, pretty sure he still does] an obsession with the character "Abigail Sciuto". So yeah, he did. He's just like the stalker from "that" episode if you watch the show... I'm really happy to hear a side conversation because, well, coming to a place and getting help should be comforting. Not stale and solid as a rock. Thank you tremendously for showing humanity even though it really isn't much. :D It is to meh.

Ok, back to business. I'll do the things requested and get back to you by today. Thank you for pointing out AppRemover, a friend of my friends [this is getting complicated without names. o.o] had installed a CD-Rom game and unfortunatly I can't remove it since he doesn't play it anymore here in particular. The install shield fails every time... So thanks for that bit of good irony. ^^

Wish me luck! I've heard that combofix is extremely... Powerful... All these tools are. Thank goodness for caution, safety and strength. D: Two of which are the same and this household lacks... They won't see me typing this, I hope. XD

I'm going to disable Microsoft Security Essentials by ending the process msseces.exe and MsMpEng.exe as well as ask you this: Is there really a best software to you for total security? I've heard AVG before and I hated it's false positives... I've also heard of Malwarebytes, ESET's NOD32 Smart Security [the real one x.x] and Commando... I think it's Commando, or Kommando, MK style. Is there truly a "best" in your opinion, not restricted to these? Oh, and I've heard MSE is kinda pale in comparison to protection elsewhere... Ultimately what people need is a site that rates security software and freeware. With professionals. And it needs to be easily findable and have a good WOT score eventually. [XD] I use WOT because it's... Essential. Recommendable as far as I've seen. :D Any better link scanners?

And one more comment. Mbam's [Malwarebytes] service is faulty, but it's a registered product. I just use it to do a Full/Flash scan because I like the quality of its work. ^^; So, is there really a true way to disable both of these if they're on without using a tray? Mbam doesn't have it and MSE... Just can't be stopped by the tray itself...

I'd hate to leave this all for you at once, but posting the scans AND this will be overkill, plus it'll be something to kill time if you have any, and it'll help meh in the long run compared to not asking.

...If you're a father, happy father's day. My father finally is starting to get to know me starting this week... It's emotional, and I kinda feel it's important to get that news out where I can... [Off-topic entirely but I don't care... It's important to me.]

EDIT: HORF... AppRemover is for Security Applications specifically then. Alright.

EDIT2: Commando/Kommando is actually Comodo, just googled it... The cardinal rule of the internet is failed yet again. They should add googled to the Firefox Spell-Check Dictionary. :D

EDIT3: ComboFix detects an old installation of AVG but AppRemover Doesn't, even upon clicking the option to show all... So... I need help with that to use it. Here's the OTL log, is it ok that I'm using quotes? Trying to be helpful.
