I've been told that I probably have things running in background that I don't need. The first thing that was suggested was to run a HijackThis log, which is printed below. My primary interest in speeding up is for gaming. I initially posted this in wrong forum. Hijack log is below this.

Thank you for your help

This is what i posted there with some things I have done:

I am having (as so many do) problems with computer speed. I ran a Hijack This and have a log and am wondering where to post to see if anyone can tell me what is on there that I don't need.

I have a Dell Dimension C521, bought about 4 years ago. I use firefox for browser. I added 2 memory cards and a graphics thingy (sorry, don't remember what it actually is) for the sake of an adobe flash game that I play. Which runs frustratingly slow. That is really my main interest in clearing up / speeding up my computer.

I use / have:
/ Malware Bytes
/ Spybot (usually get only 'Right Click')
/ Auslogics registry cleaner+ (have a subscription but dont' think I am using it to potential)
/ had Ad-Ware and removed it based on something someone said, and am wondering now if I should re-install it)
/Avast anti-virus (free version)
/Comcast connection at their second highest speed. 16 something / Only one speed higher, no one said for what I do, that I would need it, including other gamers.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Please do not PM me directly for help. If you have any questions, post them in this topic.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Update Adobe Reader

Your version of Adobe Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.

An alternate to the Adobe Reader, you could try the free (for personal use) Foxit PDF Reader. The download file is smaller and when installed,
uses less resources than Adobe Reader. Note: Do not install anything dealing with AskBar... presented as an installation option.

If you'd still like to keep Adobe Reader, then please proceed with these instructions;

Please follow these steps to remove older version Adobe components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Adobe Reader Version X. and save it to your desktop.
  • Uncheck the "Free McAfee Security plan Plus" option or any other Toolbar you are offered
  • Click the download button at the bottom.
  • If you use Internet Explorer and do not wish to install the ActiveX element, simply click on the click here to download link on the next page.
  • Remove all older version of Adobe Reader: Go to Add/remove and uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader, Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat.
If you are unsure of how to use Add or Remove Programs, the please see this tutorial:How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer
  • Then from your desktop double-click on Adobe Reader to install the newest version.
If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the "Adobe Setup - Welcome" window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • Once the installation is finished, open Adobe Reader and accept the warranty if prompted.
  • Click on Help and select Check for Updates.
  • A window will open and Adobe will check for Updates. If any updates are found to be available click on Download.
  • Once the update is downloaded you will get a system notification telling you so. Click on the popup to restore the window.
  • In the window that opens click Install.
  • Once the update is done click Close.
Your Adobe Reader is now up to date!

Java Outdated

Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform (32-bit or 64-bit).
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u26-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.
-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Hiya SweetTech,

This part took a little longer :P but I think I have it completed correctly now. Below is the log although I have a couple questions.

HiJackThis is now deleted. When I deleted it, it said there would be parts I would have to remove manually. What should I do for that?

I could not find a Windows Live Toolbar to delete in add/remove programs. I have: Windows Live Essentials / Sign in Assistant / Sync / upload tool/ is it in any of these?

You gave an alternate to Adobe Flash / Reader. Is this something that games can run on that normally use Flash? For now I did update Flash / Reader but am curious about FoxIt.

I think that is it for questions for now, here is log from OTL fix:

Thank you and what if anything is next step?

All processes killed

Hi!

HiJackThis is now deleted. When I deleted it, it said there would be parts I would have to remove manually. What should I do for that?

Don't worry about that for now.

I could not find a Windows Live Toolbar to delete in add/remove programs. I have: Windows Live Essentials / Sign in Assistant / Sync / upload tool/ is it in any of these?

No.

You gave an alternate to Adobe Flash / Reader. Is this something that games can run on that normally use Flash? For now I did update Flash / Reader but am curious about FoxIt.

Adobe Flash is different from Adobe Reader. You do not need Adobe Reader to play games. You do need Adobe Flash for that.

There was not one single item in the ESET Online scan.
I did the security check. Got the black window, but no text box.

I sure do have an awful lot of files on this computer / Thousands. / would they be slowing it down?
Also, I have logitech wireless keyboard and mouse. 'someone' (don't recall who) said that logitech recorded keystrokes and sites. Any truth to this?

Thank you very much / are there more steps? (feeling quite chuffed that I have gotten this far)

Hi!

There was not one single item in the ESET Online scan.

Okay

I did the security check. Got the black window, but no text box.

Can you try deleting the current copy of SecurityCheck that you have and download a new copy from one of the previous links provided, and see if you're able to run it then.

I sure do have an awful lot of files on this computer / Thousands. / would they be slowing it down?

That could be a contributing factor to some of the issues you are experiencing.

Also, I have logitech wireless keyboard and mouse. 'someone' (don't recall who) said that logitech recorded keystrokes and sites. Any truth to this?

I can't say I've ever heard that before.
