Please Heeeeeeeeellp, my computer was infected with the WindowsXP Recovery virus and I am having trouble removing it with the "RKill" process. RKill will run and complete a cycle ending one process 'regedit', but "mbam set-up" won't initialize and the "TDSSKiller" won't kill. What do I do now?

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Hello ST,
I was beginning to think noone was going to respond. The suggested time to wait was 3-5 days. I wasn't sure if that was business days or just days so I waited 8 then I did some investigating of my own and found the file (17358628.exe) that seems to have been causing the problem and deleted it, I was able to work on getting cleaning it up. Once I did that I also tried 2 different spywares, an unhide application and 1 antivirus, didn't completely fix the problem. I hope that is not enough for you to close the file on me. The problem is on my Asus mini laptop I carry around with me. I use it for just about everything when I am on the go, I need it up and running asap. So please, I hope you don't but, if you are going to close the post email me so I am not waiting on a response.

I am getting an "Asus Eee PC ACPI service has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". It will give me 2 options 'send error report' or 'don't'. When I select either option it comes right back seconds later.

My files are accessible, desktop picture is not showing and all the folders in the start menu all programs show as empty. But there is no sign of the malware/virus being active.

Here are the reports from the rootkit unhooker and OTL Main Mirror and OTL Mirror. I wasn't sure if Main Mirror and mirror were the same or not so I executed, posted and labeled both sets of reports.

Hi!

I'm not going to close the thread on you. I completely understand where you are coming from.

The OTL links are the same. I probably should label the links better.

It looks like we maybe dealing with a Rootkit infection.

Try this for the start menu issue;

This is a manual fix for XP users:

1. Copy the entire content of this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\1
and paste it to this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu

2. Copy the entire content of this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\2
and paste it to this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

3. Copy the entire content of this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\3
and paste it to this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

4. Copy the entire content of this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\4
and paste it to this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop

If the above does not work then you can restore the defaults for the Start Menu, Accessories and Administrative Tools as follows:

For any other missing program shortcuts you will probably need to reinstall the application or manually create new shortcuts.

NEXT:

Running TDSSKiller

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.

    Posted Image

  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

    Posted Image

  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

    Posted Image

  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Hello ST,

Thanks for understanding. I forgot to mention that once I was able to access the files and it seemed the malware was gone I then tried to do a restore point, that didn't work either.

Now about the start menu issue. I tried to copy and paste the files you mentioned...I carefully followed all the user paths, there is no smtmp\1 file in any of them, so I couldn't/didn't continue with that. The path that best fit was the administrator path, every other user ended at the 'temp' folder, with nothing in them. Uuuuuugh, I'm bout to pull my hair out...wait I have none, lol.

I tried the restore accessories and admin tools downloads, those seem to have worked.

I then re-downloaded the TDSSKiller, it didn't initialize at all. I figured the OTL needed to be done after the TDSSKiller, so I didn't even try that, should I have?

Thanks again for not closing the thread, I really appreciate it. As a volunteer how many hours or threads do you tend to a day? Wouldn't this be faster/better if you had remote access to the computer?

You're probably going to need to recreate them then.

Yes, please proceed with the OTL fix.

It really varies how many threads I do a day, and really depends on if my users reply that day or not. I only provide support on the forums.

Hello ST,

My apologies, I followed your instructions on Friday not too long after you sent them and started a reply in the midst. I guess it timed out before I could actually add the post, so my submission didn't register. I've got to retype my response then cut & paste the OTL report.

Hi!

My apologies, I followed your instructions on Friday not too long after you sent them and started a reply in the midst. I guess it timed out before I could actually add the post, so my submission didn't register. I've got to retype my response then cut & paste the OTL report.

No worries.

Thanks for understanding. I forgot to mention that once I was able to access the files and it seemed the malware was gone I then tried to do a restore point, that didn't work either.

A system restore won't restore those files as they were moved to the temp folder by the infection you had.

You didn't mention anything about the 'restore point' or the 'encountered problem' error message issues.

Please remind me what you were doing when you got the encoutnered problem error.

Are you going to walk me through recreating the start menu items? I believe I know how but not sure. If you could walk me through a couple that would be great.

You can try these instructions for doing such:

To manually recreate "All Programs" entries, follow these steps...

  • Download App Paths
  • Double click on AppPaths.exe to run the program.
  • Keep the program open.

In this example I'll recreate an entry for Avast antivirus program.
  • Go Start>All Programs.
  • Right click on Avast entry, click "Properties".

Posted Image
NOTE. Make sure, you right click on Avast program, NOT on Avast folder.

  • You'll see this window:

Posted Image

Due to the damage caused by the infection, you'll find "Target" box empty.

  • Go back to AppPaths window and find Avast entry.
  • Right click on Avast line, click "Edit".
  • A pop-up window will open:

Posted Image

  • Highlight everything in "Path" box, right click on it, click "Copy"
  • Go back to Avast "Properties" window, right click inside "Target" box, click "Paste".
  • IMPORTANT! Add quotation marks at the beginning of the path and at the end
  • Click OK and you're done.

Posted Image

In case, program's link shows as (empty):

Posted Image

  • Open Windows Explorer, navigate to Avast folder in Program Files
  • Right click on Avast ".exe" file, click "Create shortcut":

Posted Image

  • Copy that shortcut, go back to Start menu.
  • Right click on avast!Free Antivirus, click "Paste".
  • You'll see Avast shortcut recreated replacing (empty) entry.

Alternatively....
...you paste that shortcut in:
(XP) - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Avast
(Vista/7) - C:\Program Data\Start Menu\Programs\Avast

What about the TDSSKiller? Don't bother with it?

We'll use a different tool instead.

For future reference, where is the best place to get a restore disk or image for an Asus Eee PC 1001PXB? I can't get one from where I got the puter from, they closed down.

Your best bet maybe to contact Microsoft and see if they'd be able to help you out there.

What is the OTL program command text designed to do? Here is the OTL report...

The OTL command is designed to take a bunch of items that need to be addressed/removed and perform action on them appropriately.

Running ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • IMPORTANT - Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the ComboFix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Hello ST,

Been a little busy. I'm unemployed, before this incident with the computer I had scheduled a few interviews for this week. Thank you for your patience.

I wasn't doing anything at the time. I had just turned the computer on after waking up, the day before is when I managed to unhide the files and folders.

I'll try AppPaths little bit at a time in between communications with you, it looks tedious.

Here is the ComboFix report...

Hi!

No worries on the delay, I just like to make sure that my users are still with me.

It looks like ComboFix has found the main culprit.

Posted Image One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan and password stealer.

This type of infection allows hackers to access and remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it contains any other sensitive information, then from a clean computer, change all passwords where applicable.
It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to appraise them of your situation.

I highly suggest you take a look at the two links provided below:
1. How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud?
2. When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

NEXT:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

I see that you have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed on your computer could you please do a scan using these settings:

  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Select the Update tab
  • Click Check for Updates
  • After the update have been completed, Select the Scanner tab.
  • Select Perform quick scan, then click on Scan
  • Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan
  • When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results
  • Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected
  • After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest
Extra Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

NEXT:

ESET Online Scanner
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET Online Scan

Note: It is recommended to disable on-board anti-virus program and anti-spyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your anti-virus along with your anti-spyware programs.

  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked
  • When the Computer scan settings display shows, click the Advanced option, the place a check next to the following (if it is not already checked):
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin
scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as
ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
