Hello All,

Any help, advice or comment would be greatly appreciated to say the least as the virus is side stepping my ZoneAlarm Extreme Security, Adware Internet Security (free version) and Spybot SD 1.6.2. and my limited knowledge of stopping such things (usually opening msconfig and unticking the odd but obvious illegal programs) has dried up, I'm out of my deapth with this one.

I am using Mozilla Firefox but get the same problem on IE, When I type a search keyword into the search box using google. the top ranking page shows as normal, but if I click onto any of these links about 70% of the time I am redirected to various low end sales and affiliate sites. The status bar shows that sometimes I am redirected between many sites before an actual page has loaded, which can sometimes take quite a time. If I type a web address in the address bar this is never redirected. Another thing that happens is that windows will open up by themselves again to sales or link sites.

This is annoying but what is more worrying (although it may be completely unrelated) is that as I am using a master password on Firefox and think this may have been compromised as unsolicited payments from my Moneybookers account and my wifes Paypal account have been set up and tried to be activated. Both of these payments were luckily flagged by the companies and stopped and may have nothing to do with my Google redirect and Firefox password so I don't expect anyone to figure that out as it might not be related. To know I'm in control of my own browser again will enable be to change my security settings on my accounts with more confidence.

I run ZoneAlarm, Ad-aware and Spybot scans regularly and the thing that they keep finding although they do quanantine them are HEUR: Trojan.Win32.GenericWindows\manto32.dll or other Generic Win.32 Trojans and lately Worm.win32.Hystudio.cu

Again any help vastly appreciated.

Many thanks

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Dear Gingo

Hi, Sorry for the delay in replying, things seem to be getting worse and it this is one of the few times I have been able to log onto the site, Firefox has crashed several times when I am trying to log into this forum and now a problem has occurred once I am trying to follow the steps you advise.

My first problem occures trying to run the Defogger program. I used it succesfully to initially to run the reports that I first posted last week, but the icon of the program and any new downloads of the program I have used from the same link that worked last time are showing an Unfinished download icon. That is the best way I can descibe it anyway. The dds and Rkunhooked programs have downloaded fine and are showing their proper icons. When I right clicked on the defogger icon it stated at the bottom of the box that the program may have been "blocked" as it may be from a harmful site. I clicked on the "unblock" button but this did not fix this or other versions of the download.

I cannot however run these programs degogger appears for half a second and disappears and the other two programs when clikced on do not open, the hourglass icon appears for a couple of seconds and then goes back to a arrow and nothing opens. Paint, Calulator, and Open office all fail to open and ALT CTRL DEL will not appear either.

I do not know if things have gone too far and I may be best to reinstall windows, although I know the last time I did this many of my program files were still there and so the problem might not be fixed. Anyway, I'm affraid that is where I am at the moment. At this point I will happily go and get a new PC if you advise it best :) I will not do anything however unless I make things worse until I hear from you.

Many thanks

I'll post results asap but thought I'd let you know in case you were trying to reply to my first post.

Thanks very much for having a look.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi Gringo

PLease find attached log for ComboFix.

Firefox is a lot more stable and I am NOT receiving the below error when Firefox or Explorer that I used to get after I sent the last logs.

iexpolore or firefox.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x00000000" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read"

Click on OK to terminate the program

The browser still re-directs itself and the system overall switchs from running ok to it becoming slow and when programs are opened the hourglass pops but and disappears but nothing happens opens. Shutting down is also temperamental in that sometimes is just hangs without shuting down.

Many thanks

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Thanks Gringo

Not wishing to be stupid but I have copied two logs. The first is the one on the C drive as mentioned when there is a reboot, the second is the log when I scanned for a second time and nothing was detected.

Thanks

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
