Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Please do not PM me directly for help. If you have any questions, post them in this topic.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

I began by starting the download of Rootkit UnHooker RkU. I successfully downloaded the .exe file to the desktop. I right clicked and ran the program as admin. A box popped up saying "initializing", then it gave me an error message.

"Driver already loaded, force reload?"

I don't want to be too paranoid to click a box so I clicked the 'Yes' button. I got a blue screen of death. 'problem has been detected' etc. It brought me to the windows error recovery screen and gave me options for safe mode, etc. I chose to enter safe mode with Networking to see if I could perform the actions you've requested using that bootup method. It loaded my windows screen, and i proceeded to right click as admin the RkU again. As you probably already know I got a message from the software saying,

"Windows is running in safe mode. This program is not configured to work in safe mode. Would you like to do this now? (after selecting Yes - reboot Windows manually)."

Once again risking doing something you may not want me to do...I clicked Yes. The system would not reboot on its own. I manually restarted the computer by clicking the start button and selecting restart. After entering my password and logging in I tried to resume the process. Once again I right click and run RkU as admin.

Another popup came up saying "Please wait a few seconds...Precaching data"

This time the program is up! Resuming process in next post!

A few popups tried to interfere with my scan...Java update, and Internet Explorer has stopped working. Interesting that it has stopped working since I just booted up and never opened IE. I clicked close program and also closed the Java update. Here is the result of the Scan...

The computer is not running the System Recovery every 15 seconds since I loaded that little file prior to starting this post. I know I still have troubles because the PC is doing weird things. Sorry if I gave too much info or did something I wasn't supposed to. I hope this all helps me get my problem fixed. Thank you so much for volunteering your time to help me!!

I followed the instructions but could not open the TDSSKiller file. I downloaded the zip file to the desktop then I extracted to the desktop. I ran the .exe as admin. Nothing happened. I tried to double click and run it regularly. Nothing happened. I moved all the files to the recycle bin, restarted, and downloaded the .zip file to the desktop again. Extracted the files to the desktop and double clicked. Nothing happened. I right clicked to run as admin, nothing happened. I extracted the .zip file to C:/public/desktop instead of c:/users/justin/desktop. I right clicked and tried to run as admin...nothing happened. I'm not going to continue until I get some advisement. Thanks.

Hi!

The infection you have isn't letting TDSSKiller run.

Please proceed with the rest of the steps in my previous post, as well as this scan;

Running aswMBR.exe

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.

Click the "Scan" button to start scan.

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

As a side note the ASW program didn't open immediately when I ran as admin. I double clicked it thinking I had the same issue of the virus not allowing the program to run, and it eventually opened two windows. One said that the program was not initialized successfully so I closed that window and used the one that initialized successfully. Also when I Removed the card program it said that the program would be fully removed after restart. I will restart after this post. Thanks for the quick response!

Hi!

Looks like we need to use a more powerful tool;

Running ComboFix
Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt for further review.

Have I helped you? If you'd like to assist in the fight against malware, click here Posted Image

The instructions seen in this post have been specifically tailored to this user and the issues they are experiencing with their computer. If you think you have a similar problem, please first read this topic, and then begin your own, new thread. I do not offer private support via Private Message.

Hi!

This log automatically came up after running combofix.exe. I pulled up c:/combofix.txt and it appeared the same. if you need me to display the contents of that file as well let me know...

No that's okay. The log you posted and the log located at C:\ComboFix.txt are the same.

It looks like ComboFix found the main culprit.

Please yield the following warning;

Posted Image One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan and password stealer.

This type of infection allows hackers to access and remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it contains any other sensitive information, then from a clean computer, change all passwords where applicable.
It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to appraise them of your situation.

I highly suggest you take a look at the two links provided below:
1. How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud?
2. When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

NEXT:

Scanning with MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (v1.51.0.1200) and save it to your desktop.
Download Link 1
Download Link 2Malwarebytes' may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet and double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to this Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • Malwarebytes will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • Under the Scanner tab, make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box, then click the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked and then click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows the database version and your operating system.
  • Exit Malwarebytes' when done.
Note: If Malwarebytes' encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally will prevent Malwarebytes' from removing all the malware.

If I were to clean the computer and change all passwords associated with this laptop how would there still be a security risk? Especially one that a reformat could solve? Before I decide I just need to better understand what you are meaning. Can you explain it a little bit?

Yep, I can explain it a little more.

The reason why there would still be a security risk is because I have no way of knowing what damage was done by the malware to your computer before I started working with you, so it's possible that they did damage to some files that I am unable to see.

A reformat and re-install would solve the issue because you would be wiping the computer and re-installing the operating system, so if anything was hiding, it would be eliminated when your computer was reformatted. This is of course assuming that none of the files you backed up are infected.

Did that clear things up?
