Hello all:
When it comes to computers and the internet, I'm a bit more educated than the average guy, but I have somewhat of a newbie question. Is it possible to be infected by a virus by simply opening it, or more importantly, even marking it as read? I use Thunderbird, and use Avast to scan my emails, but I'm never really sure.

Any input on this noob-like question is very much appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Daniel in Tulsa

cryptodan:
I never use the preview pane, although I sometimes accidentally open it.

That is a good practice, so the likelihood of you getting infected is nill to none unless one of your opened up email is infected.

So "marking as read" isn't the same as opening the email?

To add to what Dan says, its possible to get infected by simply being connected to the internet without having email or a browser open. All it really takes is connectivity.
In the beginning there was the command line.

Eyesee:
A very good point. However I was asking this assuming that in general I'm safe by all other accounts, within reason, of course. :)
