Hi,

I contracted the Windows Vista Recovery virus on my laptop (Vista) together with a google redirect.

First, I removed Windows Vista Recovery from the startup using msconfig.

Second, I used the instructions at bleepingcomputer to remove Windows Vista Recovery:

I was not able to download any of the required files from the laptop, so I downloaded all files on a clean computer and transferred them to the laptop using an USB stick.

I first ran iExplore (Rkill):

iexplore removes different files each time I run it after a reboot, including:

grpconv.exe

I renamed Tdsskill.exe into abs123.com and started it from the desktop. However, it failed to start.

Afterwards, as recommended, I tried to start Malwarebyte, but it also failed to start. Then I rebooted and tried Malwarebyte again, and this time it worked. I did a full scan, and it found three entries related to Windows Vista Recovery that were removed.

However, the google redirect is still hauting the computer, I still can’t get to most webpages, including this blog, and I still can not run TdssKill.

Then I downloaded and ran spybot. It found three tracking cookies as well as two more Windows Vista Recovery related registry entires, all these were removed. However, all this made no differece.

Now I am stuck and would appreciate your help.

Thanks

Dr Rocks

============= FINISH: 21:41:33.63 ===============

I needed my computer badly, so I took the risk: I applied combofix. While it ran, AntiVir interfered twice despite the fact that I had disabled it. I made it ignore whatever it found and combofix ran successfully to the end. It detected and eliminated “volsnap.sys”. The redirect problem appears to be solved. TdssKiller also ran successfully after this procedure but did not find anything anymore. A full scan with Malwarebytes also came out apparently clean.

Because of my folly to run combofix unsupervised (don’t be angry), I would be very grateful if someone could check my logs so see if the computer is clean or whether I have created damage, or to see where the vulnerability was in the first place.

What logs do you need?

Many many thanks indeed!

Jochen

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Please do not PM me directly for help. If you have any questions, post them in this topic.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Many thanks for your assistance, this is very much appreciated.

Update how the computer is doing:

I unfortunately used the bleeping-recommended after virus removal clean-up software on my laptop, and I assume the combofix log was erased. However, I believe I kept a copy on my work computer. If yes, I will paste it tomorrow morning (Australia), i.e. in 11 hours. Sorry about that.

(1) The redirect virus is eliminated. No problems with the browser.

(2) However, the computer appears slower than before, particularly when I process larger fotos.

(3) Is it possible that the virus returned my computer to a very old and early system restore point? A lot of drivers seem to be missing. I also had to download a huge Windows vista update package 150 MB in size.

(4) Word only opens with an error message (can not recognize file format and offers a conversion window). If I click it away, however, the file will open properly.

(5) For using YouTube, I tried to download acrobat flash 10 (it had apparently been erased). However, without asking, nasty Adobe also installed a trial version of a virus scan program which I had to eliminate using uninstall. Why is such a reputable company doing this – installing a virus scanner unasked on top of my other scanner? But adobe flash does not seem to be installed anyway and I can’t watch flash videos.

Requested logs pasted below.

Hi Dr Rocks!

Australia huh? I love when I work with users who are from Australia!! What's your favorite thing about living in Australia? Do you see Kanagaroos often?

(3) Is it possible that the virus returned my computer to a very old and early system restore point? A lot of drivers seem to be missing. I also had to download a huge Windows vista update package 150 MB in size.

With malware, I like to think anything is possible.

But adobe flash does not seem to be installed anyway and I can’t watch flash videos.

ugh, I have a feeling you are referring to McAfee Security Scan that comes bundled with some Adobe programs. I'm not a big fan of that either, but it's very similar to what other companies have been doing for users with installing toolbars. You're usually able to uncheck the box to not install those toolbar/program.

Hi ST,

I moved to Australia because there an amazingly old rocks (I am a geologist) and because it is so beautifully empty! Kangaroos absolutely everywhere, but they do not stop being marvelous.

Yes, it was McAfee that was downloaded with Adobe Flash, and I repeated the process to check whether they asked me whether I wanted it. No, there was no warning and no way to opt out! That behavior sucks, particularly as McAfee is actually immediately activated what could cause problems with two running virus scanners.

Did you add this entry into your host file?

O1 - Hosts: 64.1.1.2 epc

No, I am not aware of this. What could it be?

EPC may relate to External PC. It could be associated with the program MassLynx, a program running a mass spectrometer. I, however, use it offline on my computer.

Requested logs attached below. I was not able to locate the Combofix log. What would the file name be? I do, however, have the tdsskiller log, if that is of use.

Thaks a lot ST!

Dr Rocks

That's interesting, I'll have to look into that some more.

O1 - Hosts: 64.1.1.2 epc

No, I am not aware of this. What could it be?

EPC may relate to External PC. It could be associated with the program MassLynx, a program running a mass spectrometer. I, however, use it offline on my computer.

It's possible, I'm not really sure.

Requested logs attached below. I was not able to locate the Combofix log. What would the file name be? I do, however, have the tdsskiller log, if that is of use.

ComboFix would be located in your C:\ drive and would be labeled C:\ComboFix.txt

We're going to run a new scan with it anyways. So don't worry about the log file right now.

Running ComboFix
Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt for further review.

Below the Combofix log. The computerr didno restart in between like in the last fix. Antivir did not interfere.

After the run, I tried to start Windows Explorer, but got the error message from iexplore.exe

"Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion"

I think I have seen this before.

I logged out then back in, and IE worked.

Thanks

Jochen

Hi!

Okay!

Java Outdated

Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform (32-bit or 64-bit).
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u26-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.
-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

NEXT

Update Adobe Reader
Earlier versions of Adobe Reader have known security flaws so it is recommended that you update your copy
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
  • Remove ALL instances of Adobe Reader
  • Re-boot your computer as required.
  • Once ALL versions of Adobe Reader have been uninstalled, visit: <<here>> and download the latest version of Adobe Reader
Alternative Option: after uninstalling Adobe Reader, you could try installing Foxit Reader from >here< Foxit Reader has fewer add-ons therefore loads more quickly.

Hi ST,

Thanks for your recommendations. While I do the installtions above, here an update on the state of the machine:

My computer does not show any suspecious behavior anymore, but there still seems to be some after-virus removal aftermath:

The virus or the malware removal software must have destroyed or removed some Word settings or templates. When I start MS Word (by opening the program directly, not a document), I get…

(1) A file conversion page (that usually comes up when a file format is not recognized by Word). At the top it says “File Convesion ~$N9Cwyw.dot”/. The offered text- conversion in the box below contains my first and surname.

When I close the window I get the error message

(2) “The add-in template is not valid C:\Users\Jochen\AppData\...\~$N9Cwyw.dot”

Moreover, I tried to installed Adobe Flash again. This time it offered to install GoogleChrome, but I was able to opt out. Installation was successful. However, in IE, whenever I come to a page that required Adobe Flash, it tells me Adobe Flash has to be installed (e.g. for you-tube videos). Flash is installed, I can open it manually, but IE does not see it. Maybe the virus modified its add-on settings?

Thanks

Jochen

Hi Jochen,

I'm not too sure on the Adobe Flash issue. I don't think the virus would modified settings for IE.

Let see if the Microsoft Word issue fixes itself, if it doesn't we may need to try and run a Diagnostic scan with MS Word.

I forgot to add something into my previous post for you to do.

Don't do the OTL scan yet.

Your computer is currently running with No Service Packs installed. This is not something that I recommend you continue to do. Please visit this link here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935791#Method2 for information on how to obtain the latest Service Pack for Vista. The latest service pack for Vista is currently Service Pack 2.

To ensure that everything goes smoothly with the Service Pack update, I'd like to see a final OTL scan, and then we will clean-up our tools in the next post.
