System manufacturer and model?

Specific error messages?

As for formatting...that all depends on how the system manufacturer set up your system...and the method by which you would attempt to format and reinstall Windows.

A screenshot taken from Disk Management would be helpful. Start/Run...type diskmgmt.msc and hit Enter.

Is d: a partition you created or is it the recovery partition? If the latter, just create another partition (e:) and save your data files there. Then you can go ahead and reformat c: and reinstall the OS. Note that you will have to reinstall all programs and drivers.
