Greetings,

This is my very first post on these forums and unfortunately it isn't one to introduce myself. To cut to the point, my computer has been infected by malware and I believe it took a toll on my hard-drive, or so it seems. My OS is: windows XP32. To make things easier for you, since you guys are frequently busy, I shall comprise a list of: symptoms, what happened,actions-taken, and results of my actions-taken. Here they are:

What Happened?
This is exactly in the order of what happened:
Avg has detected a threat in Adobe flash player reader, would you like to allow or not allow (I clicked allow).
I then ran MBAM (Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware). In the midst of the scan, a message popped up saying "Hard-drive error a reboot is needed" (I clicked 'OK'). Before my computer was able to turn-off, a fake Windows scan (the windows XP recovery virus looking one) showed up. I knew that it was a fake and so I canceled it immediately and my computer turned off.
And so when I turned my computer back on I saw the following:

Whats wrong?
Desktop Icons are gone (However I see everything that is on my hard-drive on the Add/remove list in the control panel section!)
"Start--->All programs---->empty"
The classic google redirect issue (Browser: Internet Explorer 8)
Task manager is disabled by admin
Upon start up (IN NON-SAFEMODE) I receive the following error:
"Error loading C:\WINDOWS\vbscle32.dll
The specified module could not be found."

Actions-taken
First I ran up MBAM as instincts would guide me too, around 12 threats were found (I believe I still have the logs for those, I could be wrong).
I Managed to find a way to do a system restore via safe-mode but no success there. (However, I now see a file called "Windows XP Recovery" on my Programs list, with an option to have it uninstalled)
I researched into this kind of virus through the following website's forums and dled the following programs:
TDSSkiller
unhide
OTL
Accrestore
AdminTools
I ran each of the programs listed above only once. All of which resulted in the following:

Results
Half of my programs are shown in the "Start--->all program--->" list and respectively on the desktop as well. However, the files are empty.
Task Manager is no longer blocked by admin.
TDSSkiller spotted a culprit and had it exterminated.
I still have the google redirect issue!
I still get the same error message on a non safe-mode start up

I will be in touch with you guys, and I do have a question! Should I be running these programs in safe-mode or non safe-mode? And if there is any altercation as to which type of start up I should be using could you please notify it in your post? Thanks a bunch!

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Please do not PM me directly for help. If you have any questions, post them in this topic.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Greetings ST,

In attempt to doing what you told me to do, I encountered an error when I tried to run RKUnhookerLE. At first I was greeted with a message that RKUnhookerLE could not run in safemode, however, proceeding that another error message appeared. It said "Error loading/opening driver".

In addition, it seems that my internet explorer is unresponsive in NON-SAFEMODE. My default homepage appears but anything I enter into the URL bar won't load.

P.S. Should I even be in safemode while running all these scans you request of me?

Hi!

If you're able to run the scans in Normal mode, then please run them there. RKU does not run in Safe mode, so that tool will need to be ran in Normal mode, if it's giving you issues in Normal mode, please skip down to the OTL instructions. :)

Okay, thanks for the clarification ST!
It seems someway I got access to this website in normal mode, I am running RKUnhooker right now.
Expect both logs momentarily.

Hi Joey Moe!

Please try this utility to bring back your programs.

Please download UnHide.exe by Grinler.

It will unhide folders/files that were set to be hidden by the infection you had.

NEXT:

We will address that error message you receive on start-up shortly.

Running Flash Disinfector
Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from HERE and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Running ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • IMPORTANT - Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the ComboFix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

No, please do not install that update. We'll worry about that later.

All the steps have been done with success except for the combofix. I successfully downloaded the program, however, it still detects AVG 2011 even though I successfully uninstalled AVG. (I rebooted my computer after uninstalling AVG before I ran combofix) Any thoughts?
