Hi there,

My computer has been infected since Tuesday. I had the hard drive diagnostic virus where I kept getting critical error messages and lost most of my desktop icons. I ran malwarebytes and was able to restore all my desktop items. I thought my computer was cured, but then I noticed my google and yahoo searches being redirected.

Aside from the search redirects, I also hear audio ads at random times, but I can’t see any ad or video. Sometimes they are ads for things like auto insurance, last night I heard a clip from American Idol. Lastly, I am using firefox, but at random times IE will launch a blank page.

Thanks in advance for your help, this is driving me mad!

Here’s my DDS log:

Hi,

Please do the following:

Please download TDSSKiller.zip
  • Extract it to your desktop
  • Double click TDSSKiller.exe
  • Press Start Scan
    • Only if Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected
    • Then click Continue > Reboot now
  • Copy and paste the log in your next reply
    • A copy of the log will be saved automatically to the root of the drive (typically C:\)

NEXT

Refer to the ComboFix User's Guide

  • Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2

    * IMPORTANT !!! Place ComboFix.exe on your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

You can get help on disabling your protection programs here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled.

Hi, I'm not able to run TDSSKiller. Nothing happens when I click on it. I've also tried renaming it, but still nothing...

Turned off my antivirus/antispyware applications and tried to run ComboFix. It starts to run but then a pop up appears that says "ComboFix cannot run when AVG is installed...Please uninstall AVG or use another tool," but I recently uninstalled AVG. Not sure what's stopping it.

AVG always leaves bits of itself behind, try their uninstaller

http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools

You may also use this tool to uninstall AVG:
http://www.appremover.com/get/appremover.exe

Instructions:

I tried using AppRemover and the AVG uninstaller, but there still must be a trace left, ComboFix still refuses to run. Anything else I can do?

is ComboFix refusing to run because of AVG or the malware stopping it

If you think it's the malware stopping it, then delete the copy that you have on your desktop and download a fresh copy, but rename it to iexplore before saving it, now boot into safe mode and run it from safe mode (be patient, it acts as though it hangs, but is still working) boot back into safe mode if it reboots itself so it will produce a log

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY repeatedly,
  • this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
  • go into your usual account

If it is definitely AVG stopping it from running, then run this script from the start:

Open notepad and copy/paste the text inside the codebox below into it:

  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript_AVG2011.txt into ComboFix.exe.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Ok I got ComboFix to run, but it didn't seem to follow all the steps lined out on the guide. It ran for a few seconds and then beeped with a popup saying a rootkit was detected and the computer had to restart. I let the computer restart and then nothing really happened. I don't think it finished and it hasn't produced a log.

ComboFix just finished and created a log, but when I tried to open firefox a popup came up saying "illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion.". This is coming up with anything I try to open, not quite sure what to do.

I was able to launch firefox by clicking on a link on my google desktop, but I still get the popup and cannot open any programs normally. Here's the combofix log...

Hi,

reboot the computer and that message should go away, it does that the odd time with Vista machines.

Please do the following:

  • Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware Program
  • Click the Update Tab and search for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
