I tried following the instructions in the removal thread for the Windows XP recovery infection. When I try and run Rkill (all the versions with the renames too) I get a small Windows window that says > Error- installation failed. Then the Rkill runs > be patient > access denied and it prints a log. I tried loading and running Malwarebytes to no avail.

I ran the defogger, the DDS, and the GMER and saved the files. I can't seem even get past the first steps so I am not sure how this differs. I need some help, please.

Hoping someone on here will have some advice. I ran Rkill again but same issue, it won't run. Here is the log. Ug, gonna be a rough day at work without the laptop. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. Much appreciated.

EDIT: Posts merged ~Budapest

does the lack of responses mean this machine is shot? Should I look for the operating system discs, re-format the Hard Drive and start over or will I still have issues? Anyone?

EDIT: Please be patient. There are over 320 unanswered topics in this forum at present and the current average wait time to receive help is 9 days. ~Budapest

Thanks Budapest - I understand. Looks like you guy work you butts off. Looks like word got out about you all! I'll probably buy a new laptop - needed a good excuse anyway :). Once this one gets back to life I can grab the last files that weren't backed up and have a backup rig for the next disaster (hopefully averted with better Anti-virus software).

Anyway, thanks in advance for the help.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Hi!

It's been several days since I last posted instructions for you to complete. Do you still require assistance in getting your computer cleaned up?

Please Note: Unless notified in advance, threads with no response in 3 days get closed.

Thanks,
SweetTech.

Can you provide me with a little more information here? I'm not exactly sure what you are seeing. I'm not sitting in front of your computer, so the more information you can provide me about this Hard Drive Error the better.

Are you not able to connect to the internet on this computer?

Sorry Im a little overwhelmed doing this. I have only done this 1 time before (fixed a computer) and that was with the help of this web sit. So with that being said.... Windows delayed Write Filed.
windows was unable to save all the data for the file \\system32\\496A8300. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware. Widows XP Recovery detected a bad secor on your hard disk drive. The error may cause the following problems....data corruption and loss, hard drive inaccessibility, system errors and failures.
Also here is the report from the Run fix
All processes killed

I understand that. Just try and provide me with as much information as you can. :)

Let me have you run a more powerful tool and see where we stand after it.

Running ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • IMPORTANT - Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
