Here's my problem: something changed my internet explorer so there's a toolbar in the place of the address bar, with lots of links to different search topics, and it wont let me change any of the toolbars or the address bar. I looked through other people's suggestions and did a few things, and now the toolbars are gone, but I still cant change which toolbars I see, and I cant get my address bar back.

At first I kept having something pop up in the bottom righthand corner that said my computer was infected with malware, and it told me to click on it to protect my computer (this icon looked like the windows update). i figured out it wasnt, it was something having to do with spyaxe, and I downloaded a program to remove that. but I still have the toolbar on my internet explorer and it wont let me change my toolbars, and it took away my address bar. it also directs me to different websites than the url that I type in or the link that I click on.

I cleared temporary internet files and temp files.
I ran spybot and ad-aware. Spybot found nothing and ad-aware keeps finding something that effects windows and restricts toolbars. I try and delete it but every time I scan it shows up again.

I ran CWShredder, which removed a couple CWS things, that have not shown up since I removed them.

I ran bitdefender and mcafee avert stinger. bitdefender deleted a few things.

here's my hijack this log:

Hello,

It is really important you perform everything in the exact order without missing any steps.

Download Brute Force Uninstaller.
Unzip it to a folder of its own (c:\BFU).
Read here how to unzip/extract properly:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/xpcompressedexplanation.html
Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

Next to the 'scriptfile to execute'-window you'll see a little icon as shown in next picture: Posted Image
When you click that icon, a little window will open that says: 'Please enter the full URL to the sript you want to execute'
In the field, copy and paste next URL:

http://metallica.geekstogo.com/p2pnetwork.bfu

Click Ok
Then click execute in Brute Force Uninstaller.

Wait for the complete script execution box to popup and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan, and check the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.mybluelight.com/s/search?r=minisearch <== if you set this entry yourself, don't check it.

If you see an entry as well in your O4 lines in hijackthis, starting with dm... for example:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dm***.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dm***.exe (the *** stand for random letters) or starting with hg... for example:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hg***.exe] C:\Windows\System32\hg***.exe
Check it as well. If not sure, leave it and only check the ones I asked you to check

Click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile that will open (C:\fixwareout\report.txt), along with a new HijackThis log.

Hello,

Search for and delete next two files:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DMFJN.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\FOFAQ.DLL

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

If you are having XP SP2, read here how to configure Security Features for Internet Explorer:
