Today I downloaded Microsoft's Antispyware programme, and it tells me it expired in December. I then ran the update it offered, and it still tells me I have the old version which is expired. How do I get round this, please?

I would either email Microsoft Support or uninstall Microsoft AntiSpyware then reinstall it.

He is right you will have to reinstall it. But you will also have to download the latest version.

Thanks - I did uninstall and reinstall, but same result, even when the download said it was valid until June 2006. However, when I repeated this process the next day, it worked OK.
