I was trying to help fix a coworkers computer but the problem is way beyond my means. The computer keeps freezing up even in Safe Mode. I can run Malwarebytes (I changed the .exe)for a little while but eventually it freezes as well. It does not have MSE because they had McAfee on there but it is not working either. This thing had about 9 freakin' toolbars and craploads of stuff downloaded from file sharing software (you know what kind). I believe there are multiple infections but it freezes everytime I start to run anything for any length of time. I can get a HiJackThis file however if needed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanx!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Please take note:

  • If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know.
  • If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • If you are unable to perform the steps we have recommended please try one more time and if unsuccessful alert us of such and we will design an alternate means of obtaining the necessary information.
  • If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.
  • If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
  • Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Note:
If you are unable to run a Gmer scan due the fact you are running a64bit machine please run the following tool and post its log.

Please download aswMBR ( 511KB ) to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon to run it
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop and post it in your next reply.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

Hello,

Please try the following in safemode. Make sure you select the option with Networking.

1.
Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
    Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

2.
Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

Things to include in your next reply::
TDSSKILLER log
Combofix.txt
How is your machine running now?

I ran the TDSS and it came back with no infection found.
I ran Combofix in safe mode and could not get it to finish.
It would state: Access Denied. Administrator permissions are needed to use the selected options. Use an administrator command prompt to complete these tasks.
It would run until it said Completed stage 50 and nthen freeze. It did this more than once when I ran it. I tried to copy and paste the combofix info from the dos window and I was able to select all and copy, but when I tried to paste it to a notepad doc, it froze the computer.

Hello,

Did you Right click ON COmbofix and click run as Administrator? See if there is a Combofix.txt located at C:\Combofix.txt. If there is no Combofix.txt then re run it again and make sure you run as admin.

I did click run as administrator and there is no combofix log located at C:\Combofix.txt. As of this point I have tried running combofix several times (each as administrator) and it halted at the same part every time. As of right now, Combofix will not even run! It starts to do its thing and then the screen disappears and never comes back. I tried to delete Combofix and download it again but there is a file which cannot be deleted. It states Error 0x80070570: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. The filename is 6343 aand the Type is just listed as File (size 0 bytes).

1.
Uninstall Combofix
  • Make sure that Combofix.exe that you downloaded is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    o *If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
  • Click on Posted Image then Run....
  • Now copy & paste the green bolded text in the run-box and click OK.

    ComboFix /Uninstall

    Posted Image

    <Notice the space between the "x" and "/".> <--- It needs to be there
    Windows Vista users: Press the Windows Key + R to bring the Run... Command and then from there you can add in the Combofix /Uninstall

  • Please advise if this step is missed for any reason as it performs some important actions:
    "This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.
    It also makes a clean Restore Point and flashes all the old restore points in order to prevent possible reinfection from an old one through system restore".

2.
Please copy the contents of the code box below, open notepad and paste it there. On the top toolbar in notepad select file, then save as. In the box that opens type in remservice.bat for the file name. Right below that click the down arrow in the line for "save as" and select all files. Save this to your desktop and close notepad.

@echo off
sc stop YRXILUL
sc delete YRXILUL
sc stop LF
sc delete LF
sc stop IMJ
sc delete IMJ
del remservice.bat
EXIT
Locate the remservice icon on your desktop and double click it. A box will pop up briefly on your screen and disappear, this is normal.

NOTICE: This file was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine.
Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

3.
Download and Rename Combofix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it 1234.scr before saving it to your desktop.

Fireman, this thing is about as screwy as it gets! First (all of this was done in safemode), I ran the Combofix /Uninstall (I remembered the space before /). I then cut and pasted the remservice to notepad and saved it. I ran it and it seemed to work as stated. I downloaded the Combofix and saved it as 1234.scr. At that point I realized I had Clamwin on the computer and had could not figure out how to disable it. So I uninstalled it and the computer needed to restart to remove it. When it restarted and it booted back up, I had lost internet connectivity (just on that computer, not on my laptop) and it would not reconnect. I attempted to run 1234 as an administrator but that option was not listed when I right clicked. Instead it listed Test, Configure, Install, Scan with FileCure...7-Zip. When I hold the cursor over the 1234 file, it shows that it is only 3.91MB whereas I thought Combofix was about 4 MB (it also lists it as a screensaver but I realize that is intentional to fool malware. SHould I run 1234 as is. I appreciate you helping with this riduculous mess that I agrred to help fix.

And I apologize if I have done anything that has impeded the process (like uninstalling the Clamwin) I will follow everything to the letter from here on out. I don't want to make your life more difficult.

1) Still run the minitoolbox in Safe Mode?

2) If I put Combofix on a flash drive, should I still rename it as 1234.scr before pasting it on the desktop?

Hello,

1.
We need to run a CFScript.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Killall::

Folder::
c:\program files\SGPSA\ie3sh.exe?m Files\SGPSA

Firefox::
FF - ProfilePath - c:\users\Matt and Justin\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\20ocbgz6.default\
FF - prefs.js: browser.search.defaulturl - hxxp://search.conduit.com/ResultsExt.aspx?ctid=CT2857572&SearchSource=3&q={searchTerms}
FF - prefs.js: browser.search.selectedEngine - My Web Search
FF - prefs.js: browser.startup.homepage - hxxp://search.conduit.com/?ctid=CT2857572&SearchSource=13
FF - Ext: Conduit Engine : engine@conduit.com - %profile%\extensions\engine@conduit.com
FF - Ext: Elf 1.12 Community Toolbar: {38542454-dfb6-44f5-b052-d4e071a3d073} - %profile%\extensions\{38542454-dfb6-44f5-b052-d4e071a3d073}

Registry::
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"FBSSA"=-

NetSvc::
svcboot_mencaj

Driver::
IO_Memory
svcboot_mencaj
GamesAppService

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

2.
Please boot into Normal mode and see if you can get the MiniToolBox to run then post its log.
also see if your have Internet.

Things to include in your next reply::
Combofix.txt
Result.txt
How is your machine running now?
