Hi

I run windows 7.

First problem - McAfee recently picked up a trojan (possibly Alureon, but I can't remember the name) and attempted to remove it but failed because the file was not found.

Second problem - A few minutes after, icons started disappearing off my desktop and I get a message saying that there were some errors detected with my IDE/SATA drivers and that I had to reboot. This leads me to believe that I have the Window's Recovery virus.

My PC froze, so I rebooted, only to encounter a bigger problem - my pc is now unbootable (possibly from Alureon). I see the Windows 7 loading screen, a flash of a blue screen, and my computer resets.

I have tried the following, but to no avail:
- I booted from the Windows 7 installation disk to try a repair, but there are no drives detected (ie - no C:), so I can neither repair nor start a fresh installation.
- While in the windows installation, I tried selecting a driver from the Windows 7 installation disk (atapi.sys) and my Motherboard installation disk (nvstor32.sys), but I get an error message saying that the driver is not related to my drives.
- I checked my BIOS and saw that my HD is detected but my Primary IDE master and slave are disabled.
- I plugged my HD into a USB adapter and connected it into my laptop. It recognises that a USB HD has been plugged in but the drive does not show in My Computer. When I right clicked My Computer and selected 'Manage', the drive appears under Disk Management, but shows up as invalid.

The above is the extent of my IT capabilities. The majority of the help/fixes I see require you to at least be able to see your C:, so I'm at a loss on what to do next. My preference is to salvage what I can as there are some documents I have worked on over the last few days that have not been backed up yet.

I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Raymond

Hi, :welcome:

Lets give it a try.

We will need to view the system status from an external environment. You will need a USB drive and a CD to burn. There will be several steps to follow.

Download GETxPUD.exe to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Run GETxPUD.exe
  • A new folder will appear on the desktop.
  • Open the GETxPUD folder and click on the get&burn.bat
  • The program will download xpud_0.9.2.iso, and upon finished will open BurnCDCC ready to burn the image.
  • Click on Start and follow the prompts to burn the image to a CD.
  • Next download driver.sh to your USB drive
  • Also Download Query.exe to the USB drive. In your working computer, navigate to the USB drive and click on the Query.exe. A folder and a file, query.sh, will be extracted.
  • Lastly, download Dumpit by noahdfear to the USB drive.
  • Remove the USB & CD and insert them in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer with the CD you just burned
  • The computer must be set to boot from the CD
  • In some computers you need to tap F12 and choose to boot from the CD, in others is the Esc key. Please consult your computer's documentation.
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Then type bash driver.sh -af
  • Press Enter
  • You will be prompted to input a filename.
  • Type the following:

    Winlogon.exe

  • Press Enter
  • If successful, the script will search for this file.
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    volsnap.sys

  • Press Enter
  • If successful, the script will search for this file.
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    explorer.exe

  • Press Enter
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    Userinit.exe

  • Press Enter
  • After the search is completed type Exit and press Enter.
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as filefind.txt
  • While still in the Open Terminal, type bash query.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as RegReport.txt
  • Then, close the Open Terminal window. Confirm that you see the file dumpit in your USB drive and double click on it.
  • After it has finished a report will be located in your USB drive named mbr.zip
  • Attach this file to a reply
  • Plug the USB back into the clean computer, except for the mbr.zip file, post the contents of the report.txt, filefind.txt and RegReport.txt in your next reply. The mbr.zip file must be attached to your reply.

No request for help throughout private messaging will be attended.

JSntgRvr, thank you for your quick response.

I had trouble adding attachments - I don't seem to have the ability to. I have uploaded it to fileserve and have attached the link below.

As instructed, here are the contents of the respective text files:

The zip file was empty.

Lets try this fix manually.

  • Boot to xPUD
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • Browse to the /mnt/sda3/Windows/System32/DriverStore/FileRepository/volume.inf_x86_neutral_29364d30156a24ca/volsnap.sys file. Right click on it and select "Copy"
  • Then browse to the /mnt/sda3/Windows/System32/drivers folder. Right click on an empty space in this folder and select "Paste". Overwrite the existing file.
  • Attempt to boot in Normal Mode.

Let me know the outcome.

Hi JSntgRvr

I did the above but it did not work. Still see a flash of blue before my pc reboots.

I re-ran the above test - xPUD shows the mbr.zip file to be 0 bytes.

Remove the filefind.txt file from the USB drive.

Boot to xPUD

  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • Select the folder the represent your USB drive and make sure you see the driver.sh file
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Then type bash driver.sh -af
  • Press Enter
  • You will be prompted to input a filename.
  • Type the following:

    volsnap.sys

  • Press Enter
  • After the search is completed type Exit and press Enter.
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as filefind.txt

Post the new filefind.txt in your reply.

Close the Open Terminal.

=============================================================

Browse to the /mnt/sda3/Windows folder. See if there is a minidump folder within. If present, copy this file to the USB drive. In order to attach this to a reply, in a working computer right click on the folder and select Send to -> Compressed (zipped) folder. That should produce a zip folder. Attach this folder to a reply.

=============================================================

Boot the computer normally and tap on F8 during startup until you get to the advanced menu. Select the option not to restart on boot failure. Then let it boot. That should give you the exact error at startup within the blue screen. Please write down the exact error message and paste it on your next reply.

============================================================

How many hard drives are in that computer? Can you tell if the sda3 is the drive where the Windows 7 operating system is?

Hi JSntgRvr

To answer your question, there is only one hard disk, but it has several partitions in it. I'm not sure how to tell if sd3 is the drive where Windows is installed, but given the folders in sd3 - Program Files, My Documents, etc; I'm guessing it is.

Lets write a new boot record.

  • Put the Windows Vista or Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
  • Press a key when you are prompted.
  • Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
  • Click Repair your computer.
  • Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
  • At the prompt type the following and press Enter after each line:

    Bootrec /FixBoot
    Bootrec /FixMbr
    Exit

If successful, restart in Normal Mode.

Hi JSntgRvr

Looks like I'm back to square one. I can't access the C: at all.
When I boot from the windows installation disk and select repair computer, I see the following:
Posted Image

There is no option for me to select.

When I go to the command prompt and type C:, I see the following:
Posted Image

I have tried running bootrec commands (/fixmbr, /fixboot, /rebuildbcd) from the command prompt, but they don't work because they say there is no drive with a boot sector attached.

Perhaps this would be a better view. From the Windows Recovery Option (picture 1 above), if I click Load Drivers, this is what I will see if I click on Computer.

Lets run TestDisk:

  • Download xPUDtestdisk.exe and save it to the USB device
  • Double click xPUDtestdisk.exe to extract the contents to your USB device
  • Remove the USB and insert it in the ailing computer
  • Boot the ailing computer to xPUD
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Click the File
  • Expand mnt icon on the left
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type testdisk/testdisk_static
  • Press Enter
  • The TestDisk command window will open
  • Choose Create and press Enter
  • TestDisk will now detect all local hard drives
  • Use the arrow (up and down) keys to highlight the disk called /dev/sda if it represents your primary hard drive and press Enter
  • If your not sure then note everything you see and post it for my review
  • Select [Intel] and press Enter
  • Select [Analyse] and press Enter, then press Enter again to run a [Quick Search]
  • When complete, press Enter to continue, then select [Deeper Scan] and press Enter.
  • When the deeper search completes, press Q repeatedly until TestDisk closes.
  • Close the Terminal Window
  • Remove the flash drive and put it back in the working computer, then post the contents of (or attach) the testdisk.log file on the flash drive.

I will have a colleague check this report.

Meanwhile, in xPUD, lets attempt to obtain a backup of the MBR once again. This time use the following process and let me know if the file size is 0.

  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see the files in your USB drive.
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr.bin bs=512 count=1

Leave a space among the following Statements:

dd is the executable application used to create the backup
if=/dev/sda is the device the backup is created from - the hard drive when only one HDD exists
of=mbr.bin is the backup file to create - note the lack of a path - it will be created in the directory currently open in the Terminal
bs=512 is the number of bytes in the backup
count=1 says to backup just 1 sector

It is extremely important that the if and of statements are correctly entered.

  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named mbr.bin
  • zip that file and attach it to a reply

No request for help throughout private messaging will be attended.
