Hello, my name is John. I was on my computer today, installing a program for my vinyl plotter, when Norton pops up that it has an infected file which I need to "manually remove" It is located at C:\qoobox\quarantine\c\windows\system32\drivers\ftdisk.sys.vir And also when I click on the details, it lists the activity, there are 2 entries, " C:\qoobox\quarantine\c\windows\system32\drivers\ftdisk.sys.vir (Manual Removal Required) & c:\system volume information\_restore{c383ef5b-837b-44d5-af1f-f9480b5e9f24}\rp11\a0004706.sys (No Fix Attempted)" It also says the ftdisk.sys.vir file is a "Backdoor.Tidserv.I!inf" I can still access the internet just fine, and everything seems fine, but I'm worried about this "unresolved security risk"

If you need me to post any more logs, let me know.

Thank you so much, in advance.
John

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Thanks.

Here is the DDS log. I couldn't get GMER to finish, it would literally scan for hours, how long does it usually take? I made sure I unchecked the boxes that needed to be unchecked. Is there a different way to run it?

Hi,

Seems that you forgot to follow some last steps that helper gave you on your previous visit here.
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK

Let me know if that processed without any errors.

Although that was not in the previous posters steps, I did it anyway, and When I click run and paste "Combofix /uninstall" it comes up with "We cannot find 'Combofix'..."

p.s. I also tried GMER again, it runs for a very long time, last time I've had to run GMER it didn't take long at all, leading me to believe that something is wrong, but i'm not sure ?

Hi,

With the "previous visit" I meant the case Noviciate helped you with last fall. Anyway, please download this to your desktop (not in any separate folder there) and then do the following:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now copy-paste "%userprofile%\desktop\Combofix.exe" /uninstall in the runbox and click OK.

Good. C:\qoobox\quarantine\c\windows\system32\drivers\ftdisk.sys.vir was an item that ComboFix quarantined last fall. It should be gone now.

Oh geez, I feel like a tool for this, since it was just one more step from last time, it's just weird that it popped up out of nowhere from so long ago. So will it show up in my Norton Security History under, "unresolved security risks" still? Because it is still there.

Thanks for your help :)

If there's an option to clear history then that should take care of the entry. It shouldn't reappear.
