Hi SweetTech
Thanks for getting back to me and offering your help.
I followed the guide you linked me to.

1) Backup your data:
I couldn't. The programs recommended didn't let me save to a DVD disc. I'll keep trying, but the saves so far have just frozen at 15% progress.

2) - 6)
Done.

7) - DDS
Done, and here are the DDS.txt log below. The Attach.txt log I have attached.

DDS.txt:

8)GMER log
Done and attached.

The computer is getting slower and the mouse and other graphic movements are getting choppier. Also the sound in web streaming is breaking up and turning metallic, and the video streaming quality is less smooth. Apart from that, I have nothing new to add that I can think of. The Google redirect problem continues.

As I mentioned before, all I have done to resolve the problem of what looks to my inexperienced eye as a virus is to try ComboFix - which kept stalling at 'Stage 49 complete' - and Malware Megabytes and any other program I found well recommended. I also emptied my cache and cookies and other little tidying things which people on message boards recommended. That's how I found you, too.

Thanks for your help. Look forward to hearing from you. I hope I have given enough information and I'll keep trying to back up my data.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Please do not PM me directly for help. If you have any questions, post them in this topic.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

4)Finally, about how my computer's running, all I have to say is that it is taking 5-10 minutes to start. About the Google redirect, it is not getting worse right now. Just some 10% of links are taking me to advertising websites.

I hope the above data sheds light. Thanks again.

Running ComboFix
Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt for further review.

OTL by OldTimer - Version 3.2.23.0 log created on 05262011_193926

About ComboFix:
It stalled at Stage 49. I used AppRemover to get rid of AVG and Malwarebytes - my only security and anti-virus programs - but when ComboFix opened it detected AVG anyway. It offered to proceed with the scan anyway. I accepted. But then it stalled at 'Stage 49 completed'. I let it sit like that for an hour or two to see if it would eventually get through the block. But nothing happened.

Hope I did everything right.

Thanks again.

Can you try running ComboFix again in Safe mode?

Entering Safe Mode

  • Restart your computer.
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY repeatedly,
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll to Safe Mode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
  • Go into your usual account

Hi ST,
Safe mode didn't work either. Again ComboFix warned me that AVG was running, even after I had removed it (I also looked for residual AVG files on the computer and couldn't find any). ComboFix stalled at 'Stage 49 completed'.

Hi ST,
No luck again. ComboFix stalled at 'Stage 49 completed'. For about half an hour. Then I gave up.
But there was no warning about AVG from ComboFix this time.
About the computer, it is taking 5-10 minutes to start. And yesterday it froze twice on startup, once it had loaded the desktop.
But no sign of the Google redirect in the last couple of days. Admittedly, I've been using the internet very little. But it seems that problem is all but gone.

Hi!

You have 3 files on what I'm presuming is a back-up drive. I'm going to remove them. If this is an issue, please let me know.

  • Posted Image
  • Click the Browse button and search for the following file: C:\Users\Conn\Videos\Miro\Adobe Indesign Cs4\Activation\CS4MCLG.EXE
  • Click Open
  • Then click Send File
  • Please be patient while the file is scanned.
  • Once the scan results appear, please provide them in your next reply.
If it says already scanned -- click "reanalyze now"

Please post the results in your next reply

No Anti-Virus Present

Looking over your log it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect cleans and erase harmful virus files on a computer
Web server or network.
Unchecked virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present and will clean delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors
  • Avira AntiVir Personal - Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50000 viruses. Free support.
  • avast! 6 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.
