I scanned my system fully with malware bytes (updated recently), and removed what it found. Then I also did a full scan with Spybot search and destroy and that found some leftover stuff which I then removed. However, I'm still getting redirected to other sites, specifically when I search for university websites/college info sites. I'm really hitting a dead end here, but then I found this forum. So if there is anything you can do it would be greatly appreciated! Thank You!

Hi,

First of all, please make sure hidden files and folders are shown. See here how to do this:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/show-hidden-files-in-windows-7/

Then, Navigate to and delete the following folder:

c:\users\yaakov\appdata\local\{4374D4C5-E8B1-4302-B50D-EBB3120BEC60}

Make sure your Firefox is closed when you delete above folder!

Then, * Please download the Suspicious File Packer from here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/files/sfp.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and run it.

Paste the following bold part into the Suspicious File Packer window:

c:\users\yaakov\appdata\roaming\svrwsc.exe
c:\users\yaakov\appdata\local\xrf.exe

Allow SFP to pack the file. This will generate a CAB archive on your desktop.
Go to this page.
Enter the url of this thread in the first field.
Where it says, browse to the file that you want to submit, click the browse button next to the second field and browse to the CAB archive that was been created on your desktop.
The cab file will be called requested-files[*].cab (the * stands for the date and hour).
Then click the Send File button below.

Once you've done above, also delete those two files:

c:\users\yaakov\appdata\roaming\svrwsc.exe <== it could be possible this one is not present anymore
c:\users\yaakov\appdata\local\xrf.exe

Then, I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.

After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.exe to your desktop.
Then run ResetTeaTimer.exe.
This will only take a few seconds.

Then, Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"SvrWsc"=-

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Then, Uninstall the Ask Toolbar from add & remove programs (since this toolbar is not recomended).

Reboot afterwards and let me know how things are now...

Hi,

First off, Thank you so much for responding to my problem. Its really appreciated. I'm sorry it took me so long to respond with an update, I was super busy and I didnt have time to go through all the steps yet. So today I did as you said. A few notes:

1) When i did the final reboot, there are now 2 files on my desktop that are in ghostlike icons and are named desktop and they are INI files. Not sure what to do with these or if they are normal.

2) My browser indeed works now. Gmail is working normally again and so is google. No more redirects.... Thank You!

3) Am I supposed to turn teatimer back on? I'm not even sure if its worth running. is it something you would suggest to keep running in the background?

4)I have been running Rkill often, because its the only way I would feel a little safer using my computer for the past week. After completing all the steps in the previous post, when I run RKill it is still stopping certain processes. Namely C:\Windows\System32\grpconv.exe Is this related? Or just another problem of mine.

Again I really want to thank you for your time and help. Its really appreciated and noted.

Thanks

Wallahfive

Hi,

1) When i did the final reboot, there are now 2 files on my desktop that are in ghostlike icons and are named desktop and they are INI files. Not sure what to do with these or if they are normal.

This is normal since I asked you to show hidden files and folders + protected system files. They have become visible then. Just hide the hidden files and folders again and you won't see them.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/394-hidden-files-folders-show-hide.html

Yes, you can enable Teatimer again, but I want you to know that teatimer is not really just monitors registry changes in your Windows and gives an alert when there's a change and asks you if you want to block the change or not. This also means that it will alert for legitimate files. So, if you are installing or updating a certain program, in that case, you have to tell teatimer to allow the changes instead of blocking it.

RKill is mainly a tool that kills almost all running processes, so tools/programs will run (in case malware blocks them). It doesn't mean because it kills some processes that they are malware though. In your case, a legitimate file was killed. RKill is really not needed to use if you're not infected, as it won't change anything here. The best protection is to install an Antivirus.

Glad I could help. :)

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
