Hi can somebody give me some advice on how to remove AVG 8.5 free edition from my laptop. I have tried to uninstall it through programs and features but this gives me an error message : Installer initialization failed due to following error:
Error: @AvgErrorCode_0x0253 %FILE% = "C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8"
@AvgErrorCode_0x0020 :
I tried to download a new version of AVG but whenever I try and download anything from the internet although it downloads, when I click to open the download the open box in the menu is greyed out rendering it impossible to open any download. This happens on anything downloaded. I have tried "save as" and saved to desktop or my docs but nothing appears there.
I have Googled the problem and most answers say "Download the AVG Uninstall tool" which I have tried many times only for it to sit in the download folder unable to be opened. One Google search stated this problem was caused by AVG.
I would be most grateful if anyone could help me sort this annoying problem out.
Thanks in advance.
Mark.

I would boot into safe mode and delete any folders having to do with avg, then go into my registry and delete everything avg related also. Just my quick 2cents

Also uncheck anything avg related from starting through msconfig

How are you trying to open it? You dont need to open it you just want to run it.
Click on the link. When it prompts you if you want to save or run click run
Click run again on the next screen.
Reboot if prompted
In the beginning there was the command line.

When I go to a site to download the "uninstaller" I only get the option to save or cancel. I click save which then saves it in "Downloads". When I right click on the saved item a pale blue box opens which has 6 options.
1= Open, 2= Open containing folder. 3= Go to download page. 4= Copy download link. 5= Select all. 6 = Remove from list.
Items 1-3 are greyed out and inoperable whilst the other three all work fine.
I have tried downloading "Save as" downloaded it to desktop but they never appear in my desktop????
Could AVG be causing this problem??????

I was using Firefox but just switched to IE and tried as you said. It downloaded (or seemed to) but I was unable to find it anywhere in my system.
Tried 3 times even with "close this dialogue box " unchecked (box disappears before I can click on open folder)
Any Ideas???

When you click on the link using IE there should be an option to save or run
Try clicking run. Then you have to click run on the next dialog box as well.

If you click save, pay attention to its location in the save as dialog.
That is where it is putting the file.
Simply running it from the link should do what you want.
In the beginning there was the command line.
