I've been having trouble connecting to my wireless via the PC and laptop. Strangely apple devices eg. iPad/iPod are able to connect though. Basically my connection just keeps going on and off. It doesn't stay on or sometimes it does but eventually the page would tell me DNS lookup failed?

I've checked my wires and unplugged the modem several times now. I do have a basic WPA-PSK protection. Not sure what's wrong and help is greatly appreciated.

Hi the problem went away for a while so I thought all's good but now it's back.

The laptop isn't mine so I'll just state my PC?
Intel®
Pentium® 4CPU 3.40 GHz
3.42GHz, 1.00 of RAM

My modem is linksy model WCG200

Is that what you need? Because I'm pretty noob at this computer stuff and I just got it off my system properties :|

Please download MiniToolBox To your desk top and run it.

Checkmark following checkboxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt).

The result.txt should appear when the program completes and it should exit. You can then copy and past the contents of the log into your response on the Networking forums. If the log does not automatically appear it should be on your desktop or in the folder the file was downloaded to.

Sorry for the late response i have been a bit busy lately. Everything with the log seems ok from a networking standpoint. When the connection is dropped what exactly happens? Does the connection to the router fail (local area network connection) or are you just unable to connect to any web pages?

Both. Well for the computer both happens. But usually I am still able to connect to the Internet using my iPad so I won't say the connection to the router fails.

Argh the problem is getting worse. I would be connected to the Internet for like 5 minutes and then the connection dies completely and it tells me that I am unable to connect to Internet. Seems like the PC is the issue here. Wifi works fine for the Apple products.

From the pc when the connection fails try to ping the router. Go to the command prompt and type ping 192.168.0.1 see if you get a response

The repeated application hangs in the log would seem to point to a system, rather than comms, error. Possibly memory, an infection, temperature, power supply, or just an intermittent connection on the motherboard could be the issue. This may not be easy to chase down. Any short stutter in the system clock can cause a wireless connection to go out of crypto synch for a moment, causing a glitch, but yours sounds like an even longer outage. Try to find a looping animation or watch a long video clip stored locally and see if the glitch causes it to pause as well. That would be an indication of a system problem as well. You might search the boards for your model of computer to see if others are reporting similar problems, and possible fixes.

For grins, you could try "concussive maintenance" on the box when it hangs. Give it a solid thump and see if it comes back. Not enough to crash disk heads or break something, though. If it does fix it, shut it down and unplug it, open the case (even most laptops have access hatches for memory and such) and reseat the memory sticks carefully. On a desktop you can also gently wiggle the cpu cooler a bit and reseat the power cables.

The other option is to make sure you are using the latest wireless drivers for your unit.

Good luck !

I do watch videos and it can be pretty choppy. Umm I'm not sure I'm confident enough to open up anything of my computer though but I did give a thump and well nothing happened. I did run several anti-virus programs and everything seemed clean. Grr it seems like a bunch of problems and I have no clue which but thanks anyway!

The answer to my last question tells me that the actual network connection between the router and the PC (or laptop which ever you tried the ping from) is failing. I will need to do some research to find out why your router seems to be bouncing Windows and not Apple devices.

Edit: Punctuation
