Hello, I am a first time poster, and I hope this is the appropriate forum, if not please move.

First of all, kudos to the gang here! I used your tutorial to remove the "windows vista recovery" virus and it worked like a charm (so far :0)

The only problem I have found so far is that after i did the "unhide" of all of my folders, I have found an icon that seems to be a shortcut to windows vista recovery. I scanned just this icon with malware bytes, and it found nothing. However I have a little trepidation about deleting this icon as it migh start the virus over again.

any suggestions? And thanks again for helping me remove this nasty virus.

I would also like to express GREAT appreciation for the help in removing the Windows Vista Recovery virus, note that I had the same "leftover icon" problem and removed it as suggested without difficulty... BUT...

I have two other related icon problems:

1) There's another new unknown icon that has appeared with a a complicated product-id-code type name (x16-42918_MRXXH- etc.etc.) and "Properties" indicates it is a "Microsoft Office Click-to-run Bootstrapper." I'm just a bit worried about clicking or deleting it in case it's a rejuvenator for the WVR virus. Properties also says, "This program came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer." MalwareBytes scanned it and found no problem.

2) Most of my program icons on the desktop and ALL of my Quick Menu icons disappeared. SOME of my desktop data icons reappeared after running "unhide" but many did not. Is there a quick way to revive them?

An extra thank you: A year or so ago I had the "Internet Security 2010" or somesuch virus that was VERY similar to WVR. But at that time I couldn't find such a helpful site and set of instructions and never realized all my files were simply set to "hidden." I ended up restoring them from a two-month-old backup and accepting the loss when they were probably all sitting there nicely behind an H attribute! ::sigh:: **MANY** thanks for not letting that happen to me this time!

:)

You may be still infected.
I suggest, you create new topic in "Am I Infected?" forum.
