My father bought a little computer that is currently running on Windows 98. I was wondering if it was possible to wipe the machine and install XP. If it is possible, what would I need to do the job?

do you currently have an XP Installation CD? If you do, then you can use the advisor to determine if your computer meets the requirements.

I did it on an obsolete Micron Laptop - 160mb RAM, 4GB HD and only 299mHz Pentium II Processor. Don't believe everything 'advisor' tells you. The easiest way is to slipstream the Windows CD with SP3 to create a bootable installation CD.
Feel free to ignore my comment, just another user !

The Advisor will give you a general baseline.

And your computer although slow meets the required RAM and Processor Speed along with the minimum hard drive requirements.

The minimum hardware requirements for Windows XP Home Edition are:

Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)
At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device
Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600)or higher resolution
Sound card
Speakers or headphones

From this Microsoft Knowledge Base: System requirements for Windows XP operating systems and thats dated 2007 about 6 years after XP Came out which was October 25th 2001.

System specs would be helpful.
Xp requires more overhead than 98

True it will work with the minimum system requirements per Microsoft.
But will it work well, probably not.
In the beginning there was the command line.

I suggest at least 512MB for Ram for Windows Xp Home SP3 for optimal performance.

I certainly agree here, as will Keithuk.

Just to think that an upgrade to XP, let alone XOSP3, will work is silly when no details of the Machine are known.

Bit like trying to put a V-8 into a Micro Car,with no knowledge of Engineering?
