Hello,

I would like to thank all the folks here for your great guide to removing the "Windows XP Recovery" malware. It worked great.

One thing that I still need help with is reparing the links to my programs from the start menu. I can run the programs from the executable files buried in the C:|program files \ etc... but if when you go to Start - All Programs - and select the program name you want like iTunes the next menu says empty. This is only the case for programs that are not windows programs. Programs like Accessories and Windows Media Player work. The others that were installed later like iTunes, tax software etc work when you go to the directory but not from the start menu.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Dan

I always back up my start menu folder that way if something like that happens I can just copy the good folder I have backed up on my usb drive and paste it over the corrupted one on the computer. In my case I moved all my start menu items into the "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu" folder so all of the start menu icons would be listed and I could have just one backup instead of having to back up several of the different start menu folders that xp has.

I have seen this hidden files/folders thing and can recreate it on my system.

What is the malware that seems to have this characteristic of hiding these files - it seems kind of like a new thing.

For a small test, I hid the files in my iTunes folder and then my Start, Programs, iTunes folder was (Empty) - when in fact the files where really just hidden.

I can navigate to my iTunes installation folder (which would look like there was nothing in it), enable Show hidden files and folders, then I can "see" the hidden files there, then remove the Hidden attribute and everything is back to normal.

I am curious to know what this unhide.exe does... Does it somehow figure out and go through every item in the Start menu Programs list and unhide all the files in all the folders under each Program item?

If I run unhide.exe on my system with my hidden iTunes files, will unhide.exe "fix" that for me? I am a little nervous about it since I don't know what it does.

I know I can fix my iTunes folder myself, I am just trying to understand how this works (if it is not a trade secret), and if there would be any negative effects of unhiding all the things in a Start, Programs folders?

Perhaps only Grinler knows...

Hello,

Thanks for some of your insights on my problem. I did run the Unhide.exe yesterday. It did not work for this issue but worked well for un-hiding the rest of the files when using windiows explorer.

Thanks for letting me know about the folder for the start menu. It gives me something else to check into.

Dan

Hi found this post at the bottom of http://www.precisese...dows-recovery/:

I found a website to help with restoring the start menu / programs shorcuts community.mcafee.com/message/188808
It states” It occurred to me that if it was a scam to get you to buy software – it would potentially work – so all the “lost” data must be on the disc somewhere – probably in renamed files.
So I did a full windows search of the c drive – including non-indexed, hidden and systems files for all the files created on the day that it happened and found the lost start menu files in:-
c:\users\username\appdata\local\temp\smtmp the latter being a folder containing all the files and shortcuts – I then just copied these back to their proper locations ie the start menu items belong in c:\programdata\microsoft\windows\startmenu\progams and then copied/dragged the other shortcuts back to the desktop or taskbar….
Maybe this will help other people though obviously the name smtmp might be a randomly produced one the methodology should still work.”
I searched for smtmp and found all of the links and was able to restore them.

This worked for me the links were in the smtmp folder and i just dragged and copied over the shell folders that had been left in the proper startprogram file.
This was the worst virus/trojan I've had took me quite a few hours in the middle of the night, please spread this fix as at the moment
this info is hard to find I was stuck after using malware bytes removal which worked well but couldn't find any info on restoring start menu program links.

Bleeping computer should probably add this to their guide which was excellent, that after running unhide.exe, look in that folder to get ur start menu links back.

I just took a copy from another machines good programs file and got all the windows links working again. Have to go through and weed out the differences between the two machines.

Unhide should restore the items to the programs menu.
I just used it on an infected system & it worked perfectly.

The trick to it is not to run any cleaning programs like CCleaner or anything that cleans temp files beforehand as that will delete the files needed to restore.
In the beginning there was the command line.
