I have some type of infection that appears to be hijacting search results. After performing a search on say google.com I get my search results. When clicking on the links of various search results, sometimes they work fine, but they are frequently redirected to seemingly random sites.

Note that I originally noticed the problem when using Chrome as my primary browser. I decided to uninstall Chrome, but same issue appears in IE. However, it appears that Safari isn't having this issue (at least I haven't observed it). I have also reviewed proxy settings in "Connections", thinking the hijack had set a proxy address, but there are no proxies set.

I have Norton Security Suite and it is not reporting any issues (ran full scan). I also ran Malwarebytes and a few others, but none are reporting problems after full scans. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Below is the requested information.

Regards,
Howard

I followed your directions and have included the ComboFix logs below, but wanted to note a couple of things so that you have all the detail required.

I'm running Norton Security Suite (NSS) and disabled the antivirus and firewall.

When running ComboFix it indicated that NSS was running, so before proceeding and clicking OK, I tried the link you provided for instructions on disabling anti-virus but the page didn't seem to be found. I found another page on this site that provided that information, but it seems consistent with what I did. I did find that some other Norton security features were enabled (e.g., Live Update) and turned them off.

ComboFix still indicated that NSS was running. I tried to close ComboFix by closing the window so that I could check with you as to whether I should proceed or not, but the program just started running it's process anway. So, here is the detail log.

hbmendel :

How is your computer running now? Please do this next:

Posted Image Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Java™ can be updated from the Java control panel Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now. An update should begin; follow the prompts. If it does not, let me know.

Once the install is complete...

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
    • Applications and Applets
    • Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.

So far, things seem to be running ok (definitely better than before) but I haven't used it much, other than following the steps you have outlined.

I have updated Java and am currently running the other tools you indicated, but I wanted to ask a follow-up question....just to make sure.

After the previous set of steps, I re-enabled my Norton Security Suite so that I was protected during times when I kept the machine connected (e.g., downloading Java updates). I wanted to check if there was a need to virus protection before running MBAM or ESET Online Scanner.

I'm specifically asking because of a couple of details that I noted:
  • I ran MBAM and when the scan completed it opened the log (no errors reported) and I clicked on OK for the dialog box, but didn't see anything for "Show Results", but perhaps that is only there if it found something. Just wanting to clarify.
  • More importantly, when I started running ESET, it gave me a warning about Windows Defender running and that this could impact the results. It's been running for nearly 2 hours and hasn't found any problems yet, but I wanted to see if this was going to be an issue requiring me to rerun this to be complete. However, if I do need to disable virus protection during this particular scan, I wanted see if there was a way to download and save the scan program to my pc before disabling my virus scanning.
I'll let the current ESET scan complete and then re-post with the logs from both MBAM and ESET.

Thakns so much for your help thus far; seems like I'm getting close to having things cleaned-up.

Howard

ESET just finished running, so here are the logs you requested.

I'll start using the computer some more and see if it continues to run without problem, while I await any further feedback from you.

Thanks again for your assistance!

Howard

Howard:

Your logs are looking good! You may delete that item MBAM has in quarantine. Assuming that your PC is still running well all I have left for you is another update and some very important cleanup:

Posted Image Your Adobe reader needs to be updated. Please visit Adobe's site and grab the newest version. Be sure to watch for and uncheck any boxes offering to install other software.

Posted Image Uninstall ComboFix
  • Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard or click Start -> Run. Copy and past the following text into the run box that opens and press OK:
    Combofix /Uninstall
Posted Image

Posted Image Delete the following tools along with any other logs you saved from our work:
  • DDS
  • GMER
Posted Image Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
Posted Image Finally, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions to help you stay clean in the future:
  • Restart any anti-malware programs that we disabled while we were cleaning your machine.
  • Keep your antivirus application and MBAM current and updated. Scan with them at least weekly.
  • Please read this post for some helpful information.
Please post once more so I know you are all set and I can mark this thread resolved. Good luck and stay safe!

Everything appears to be running without problem now....thanks so much for the help.

Just a couple of closing questions/carifications:
  • I have TFC and Defogger on my desktop. Do I just delete them, or any next steps to properly remove them?
  • From my 5/11 scan with MBAM, it has Hijack.Zones listed in the Quarantine. Should I just leave that there or delete it?

Thanks again.

Howard:

TFC you may keep and use routinely if you wish, otherwise just simply delete it. Sorry, I forgot you used Defogger. Do this, then delete it:

Posted Image To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_enable which will appear on your desktop.
Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

Completed these steps (although I wasn't prompted to re-boot and had to do that manually).

Thanks again for everything; I think we can close this issue now!
