Dell Latitude D830
Windows XP

Hi, I apologize because I'm not quite sure if this is a malware issue or a hardware issue. Last night I got a redirect to a different landing page and that started some kind of Malware, Windows Security XP. Immediately, my computer went black and I had to restart. Certain icons on my desktop were gone but I checked folders and everything appeared to be there. I was able to get rkill and malware bytes off of a jump drive to stop it. Malware identified several trojans and I deleted them. At some point I lost everything. My computer didn't show any files or any programs.

This morning I can't get my computer to turn on. When it starts it shows a task bar "Resuming Windows" that only gets half way and then stops. I've tried starting several times.

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

Can you hit F8 after the Dell Logo and select Safe Mode?

When I hit f8 instead of getting a safe mode option it says

System restart has been paused:

continue with system restart
delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu

Goes back to the page before and pauses half way again.

Hitting F8 should prompt you for Safe Mode.

Right, I tried again and it went back to that same message. I'm definitely hitting F8.

oh I see. I've used safe mode before by just hitting f8 but I tried fn+f8 and that didn't do anything. The key is black and the letters are white. Do you know what the second option means about returning to the boot menu?

That worked. So it loaded but a lot of stuff is missing. I have no internet browsers or at least no icons and not much registering under the start button. When I look in my programs all that is coming up is malwarebytes that I loaded yesterday. When I check my computer I have my drives but nothing is under any of the document folders. I can't find any microsoft programs like word or excel. I do have two icons on my task bar for hitman pro and avg (both I had before) and they open and appear to work. Would you know if there is a way to restore or would that bring back the malware too?

Run malwarebytes, and try posting the log.

Should I post the log here when it's finished?
