Helping a friend with the family laptop, used mostly by the kids. It's an HP Presario V6700 Notebook PC running Windows Vista Home Premium.

First indication of a problem was the appearence of Windows Recovery malware. I ran Rkill and Malware Bytes as recommended for that problem. Malware bytes found and removed numerous threats and showed a clean scan. However, there's apparently still something left because if the PC is connected to the internet for any length of time it quickly picks up more malware. At present I have it disconnected and the Malware Bytes scan is clean.

Ran DDS. The log file is below and the Attach file is attached as requested.

============= FINISH: 17:08:08.96 ===============

Tried to run GMER but it fails. As noted in your instructions, it does provide an initial warning about detecting rootkit activity. However, when I try to do the actual scan, it starts but then fails. Running with the computer in regular mode it just reboots about one minute into the scan. Running in safe mode it gives a BSOD about one minute into the scan and then reboots.

Looking for your recommendation on what to try next.

Thanks,
Tim

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Please do not PM me directly for help. If you have any questions, post them in this topic.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Hi ST,

Thanks for helping me with this. Don't worry about the delay. I completely understand how busy you must be.

I haven't changed anything or done anything more on the computer since my last post. For the most part it appears to be running fine, although I had trouble starting it this time. As I noted in my previous post, if I connect it to the internet for any length of time it rapidly collects assorted malware. At least it did the last time I connected it to the internet. Since my post I've kept it disconnected and I use a thumb drive to transfer files to and from the computer. I don't want it to collect bad stuff faster than we can fix them. I can connect it again anytime you think it's safe to do so or anytime you want to see if it still collects malware. The fact that GMER fails so badly also makes be very suspicious.

As you instructed, I ran RkU and got the following log:

RkU Version: 3.8.388.590, Type LE (SR2)

Hi Tim,

The fact that GMER fails so badly also makes be very suspicious.

I've found that GMER doesn't always work properly on some systems, and your appears to be one of those systems.

I also ran OTL as instructed. You specified that I change the Extra Registry option to Safe List. It was already at Safe List, as were all the other similar options. So OTL was run with all options at Safe List. If I need to run it again with different settings let me know. Here are the log files:

That's fine.

Do you happen to recognize this file?

[2011/05/10 17:02:43 | 000,512,992 | -H-- | C] () -- C:\Users\Wendy\Desktop\sdasetup_revwire207[1].exe

Please download UnHide.exe by Grinler.

It will unhide folders/files that were set to be hidden by the infection you had.

Your link to UnHide.exe in the above post doesn't work. I get a 404, page not found error. I have a version of unhide that I downloaded on 5/11/2011. Should I use that or do you have a better link for me.

Tim

I don't recognize the file you asked about. It isn't my computer so I'm not really familiar with everything on it. However, the date on that file seems to match the time the problems started or at least got bad enough to cause concern. She first gave me the computer to look at on Wednesday morning, 5/11. If it seems suspicious to you then I would be be inclined to get rid of it.

I ran UnHide as directed.

I ran the OTL fix as directed. Here's the log file:

This will give you part of what you asked for. I have to go out for a little bit. I'll run ComboFix as soon as I get back and post the results as soon as I get done with the scan.

Hi ST

Sorry for the delay in responding. I'm doing this for a friend on a volunteer basis and my real job got in the way today. And then it took almost three hours for the ESET online scan to run.

The Malware Bytes scan didn't find anything. But then it didn't find anything on the last scans before I started this topic. They were hiding too well at that point. Here's the results of the Malware Bytes scan:

Hi!

Sorry for the delay in responding. I'm doing this for a friend on a volunteer basis and my real job got in the way today. And then it took almost three hours for the ESET online scan to run.

No worries.

Update Adobe Reader
Earlier versions of Adobe Reader have known security flaws so it is recommended that you update your copy
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
  • Remove ALL instances of Adobe Reader
  • Re-boot your computer as required.
  • Once ALL versions of Adobe Reader have been uninstalled, visit: <<here>> and download the latest version of Adobe Reader
Alternative Option: after uninstalling Adobe Reader, you could try installing Foxit Reader from >here< Foxit Reader has fewer add-ons therefore loads more quickly.

Java Outdated
Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform.
    • 32-bit Select: Windows x86 Offline.
    • 64-bit Select: Windows x64.
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u25-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.
-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

OTL by OldTimer - Version 3.2.22.3 log created on 05212011_131744

Updated Vista to SP2 as requested. but there were problems with this. Installation appeared normal and required a reboot. After the reboot installation continued but stalled with the screen saying: "Installing Service Pack: Stage 2 of 3 - 100% complete. Do not turn off your computer." At the beginning of the update there was a warning that it could take an hour or more. I waited several hours to be sure it was stuck and then restarted the computer as the only option that I could see.

After the restart I got a screen saying: "Installing Service Pack: Stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete. Do not turn off your computer." The update then appeared to complete normally and all indications are that the service pack is fully installed and working.

Completed the OTL Custom Scan as requested. Here's the log file from that scan:

========== Alternate Data Streams ==========

@Alternate Data Stream - 171 bytes -> C:\ProgramData\TEMP:DFC5A2B2

< End of report >

Since you asked about outstanding issues I get the feeling that you think we're pretty close to being done with this problem. So far I think things look pretty good. I'm going to do more extensive testing but here are a few things that I've noticed. So far none of them look to me like indications of remaining malware.

The computer seems a little slow to me. However, I don't have a lot of experience with Vista. In the little experience I've had before, it always seemed slow to me. That's one of the reasons that I've avoided it personally. This one doesn't really seem any slower than the other Vista machines that I've worked on, just slower than I like to see.

After any restart I get a popup that says "Windows has blocked some startup programs". Malware Bytes is listed as the only blocked program. If I tell it to run the program it asks for permission to run and appears to run. However at the next restart I get the same warning. I've never had Malware Bytes remain as a startup program before. Is this a Vista problem? There is an option to remove it from the startup files. I haven't tried this yet. I figured I'd wait for your guidance on that.

Another popup notice that I get after every restart is one that says:

LimeWire was unable to start the Digital Audio Access Protocol Service (for sharing files in iTunes). This feature will be turned off. You can turn it back on in options, under iTunes -> Sharing.

Did this capability get turned off by something we did? I wan't getting this warning when we started working. I don't see any indication that iTunes is on this computer. This warning seems to be related to something just within LimeWire. If I start the LimeWire program it gives me a popup that says:

One or more files or protocols that LimeWire uses are no longer associated with LimeWire. Would you like LimeWire to re-associate them?

I haven't said yes yet. Again, I'm looking for some guidance here. I'm not familiar with LimeWire so I'm not really sure what to set or how to see if it's working. I might just leave that for them to get working again if they really want it. I'm not sure they actually use it. It looks like it might only contain one file. But I would at least like to stop the warning on each restart.

That's all I have for now. As I said, I'll continue with more extensive testing and let you know if I find any problems.

Tim

Hi!

Thanks for that information.

Yeah, I'm not seeing any signs of malware

After any restart I get a popup that says "Windows has blocked some startup programs". Malware Bytes is listed as the only blocked program. Is this a Vista problem? There is an option to remove it from the startup files. I haven't tried this yet. I figured I'd wait for your guidance on that.

This was a bug, if I recall correctly.

I'll give you a script to fix this a little later in this post.

LimeWire was unable to start the Digital Audio Access Protocol Service (for sharing files in iTunes). This feature will be turned off. You can turn it back on in options, under iTunes -> Sharing.

I'm afraid I can't be of any assistance to you in regards to LimeWire. I don't advocate the use of P2P programs, and I will only assist with their removal. I can tell you this though, I'm not seeing anything in the logs that should suggest it was anything we did.

Back-Up Registry
First, we need to backup your registry:
Please go to Start > Run
Paste in the following line:

regedit /e c:\registrybackup.reg

Click OK.
It won't appear to be doing anything, that's normal.
Your mouse pointer may turn to an hour glass for a minute.
Please continue when it no longer has the hour glass.

NEXT:

Open Notepad

Click Start > Run type notepad into the run box click OK
Click Format and make certain that Word Wrap is NOT checked.

Copy the text inside of the code box, Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad. Press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Note: There must be NO blank lines in front of the pasted text, but ensure that there is a blank line at the end of the text, otherwise the registry merge will not work.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (reboot)"=-

Now go to File > and click Save As,
From the drop down menu at the top of the box choose Desktop as the location to save this file.
Go down to the File Name box and type in fixme.reg as the file name, then choose All Files as the save as file type.
Then click the save button.
Once you have clicked the save button, close Notepad.

You should now see a file on your desktop that looks like this:

Posted Image

Locate the fixme.reg icon on your desktop and double click it, an information box will pop up asking if you want to merge the information in the file into the registry, click YES.

Once the file has run, the information will have merged with your registry so you can delete fixme.reg from your desktop as you won't be needing it anymore.

Have I helped you? If you'd like to assist in the fight against malware, click here Posted Image

Hi ST,

Regarding LimeWire, I agree with you. I don't personally use it and when I help people with their computers I usually recommend that they remove it. I'm going to do that here and if they want to keep using it, they're on their own.

Backed up the registry as directed. FYI - you may need to adjust your standard instructions on this type of action for some people. By default, in Vista the run command is not available from Start. You might want to recommend the Windows +R key combination as another way to get to the run command. That shortcut still works in Vista.

Ran the registry fix and verified that I no longer get the notice about Malware Bytes during a restart.

Also finished much more extensive testing on the computer and everything seems to be working fine.

So that should just leave a little cleaning up to do, like getting rid of some of the files, folders, and programs that we added during this operation. Right?

Tim
