Need a little help here. My computer has started freezing up while surfing the net. I'm using a Toshiba Satellite, Windows XP, with the latest version of Mozilla Firefox (4.0). After reading a few posts on here, I ran the Event Viewer and found that I have several application and system errors dating back to at least February 2011. I will post the error text below. These errors have all occurred multiple times since February. Any help or direction will be much appreciated. Thanks, Mike

One of the keys to using Event Viewer, IMO...is understanding that an error does not necessarily signal the end of the world ;).

EV will record various administrative errors that have no impact at all on the system functioning properly.

The key is to double-click the line item and read the detail for any error that you are ooncerned with. As an additional source of info on such...users can always use Google to find info on the Event ID and Source...in fact, you can go to www.eventid.net and find responses by various users to noted errors.

Did you try using a different browser (IE or whatever) to see if your issues might be related to such?

FWIW: When posting links at the forum...adding punctuation immediately at the end...renders 404 errors. I just add a space after the link, before adding punctuation marks (if I add them). I will change yours.

Users should always click the Windows-provided links...for any EV error they are concerned with. There may not necessarily be any data that addresses any concerns...but that's when the www.eventid.net website is a good source of info.

Louis

These are two months old. Have you had any new ones since then?

Are you getting any blue screen warnings?

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Thanks for the tip on the punctuation after links. I had no idea, I was just copying and pasting from notepad.

Regarding the errors, they have occurred almost daily since early February. The Windows Update Agent is probably the most frequent one. I've had no blue screen warnings.

Looking back, I'm not so sure that my frequent freezing problem didn't start after upgrading the browser to Mozilla 4.0 (upon their prompt). After running the Event Viewer and finding errors into February, I thought maybe I just wasn't paying attention and the problem had been around longer, and perhaps might be caused by all the event errors.

I'll dig a little deeper into the errors, and try Internet Explorer for a change up. I was concerned that I am not getting the proper Windows Updates.

Thanks, Mike

Windows updates...can always be obtained by going to either the Windows Update or Microsoft Update websites...and selecting/installing "manually".

There is a small history of problems users have reported concerning the update process, http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/ AND http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527#tab0 .

Thanks for the responses. I've now got a lot of other things going on, including the Generic Host message, and the search re-direct. Malwarebytes just picked this up today. Could this have been lurking in the background until now and just got really nasty (I'll show my limited knowledge!)? I'll start a fresh post in the proper forum. Thanks, Mike
