This computer has not been used much the past few years and now that it is seeing more action, I have had to remove two hijackers. I can not remember the name of the first one but it took over the entire computer (buy my AV or your computer is going to fry type deal) then today a browser hijacker in the coolweb family. I can't remember what I did for the first but I have ran AVG, ad-aware, and cwshredder then hijackthis. I would like to make sure I have now removed all the junk off of this computer so I can set it up as a "test" server. I am technically proficient and follow directions well but I have never used this product before and I don't want to take anything out or mess with anything and damage things worse. Here is my log and thanks in advance for any assistance that can be provided.

This next program is needed to remove the remaining malware entries I see. However...AVG incorrectly targets ComboFix's embedded files. ComboFix will not run with AVG installed. Please uninstall AVG before continuing. You can reinstall it, or another antivirus such as Avira or avast!, after we've used ComboFix to clear the remaining infection.

After uninstalling AVG from the Control Panel, also run the AVG remover from their site.

http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools

direct link to the AVG Remover:

http://download.avg.com/filedir/util..._2011_1149.exe

You may also use this tool to uninstall AVG:
http://www.appremover.com/appremover/avg/AppRemover.exe

Instructions:
http://www.appremover.com/about/using-appremover.html

NEXT

Download ComboFix from either of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!!
Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Ran uninstall. Everything appeared normal but when the computer restarted I got an error box telling me that Windows had recovered from a serious error and a window in firefox opened describing the stop error/blue screen (which I never saw). Downloaded and ran AVG Remover(32bit) 2011 from AVG's site. Still working on the other steps. I just thought I would mention the error in case it was relevant.

Please do the following:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

I apologize for the delay. I am still working on it. I finished the Malwarebytes scan. I left the room while ESET scanned, checking it frequently. When I came back just now it was at 90%. I left the room again, long enough to brush my teeth and the PC appears to have restarted. So.. I am scanning again. Here is the Malwarebytes log:

Hi

Please do the following:

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

File::
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\23\6b60d17-4f52138f
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\27\212ee35b-286d7e75
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\50\241aebb2-7d0fe9e9
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\Downloads\musicnotesSuite.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Toolbar\RealBar.dll
F:\desktopsave\keepers\Family\Tina\desk\exe\ZwinkySetup2.2.60.1.ZJfox000.exe
F:\f\hp.zip
F:\f\program files\c.zip
F:\f\program files\u.zip
F:\f\DocumentsAndSettings\owner\desktop\keepers\family\Tina\desk\exe.zip

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As... Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save ...

Posted Image
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

NEXT

Please advise how the computer is running now and if there are any outstanding issues

Hello and good afternoon again. We ran into a few interesting things this time around:

1. During ComboFix scan it stopped and I got a message/report error box that said pev.fcxxe encountered an error and had to close do you want to report it? I click yes and it says I am not connected the internet.

2. Another message box reporting that ComboFix needs to submit malware files for further analysisThen in the Combofix window it said it was uploading. At 16.4% it stopped and gave the error curl: 55 Send failure Connection was resetThen a message box came up saying that the server appears to be temporarily inaccessible and it created a file c:submit.htm that I should use to upload later.

And I did have one question as well. I did delete the zip files in question as to not impede any progress but they are zip files I created and while my organization look suspiciously like music, I had a brain fart and organized some of my back-up files by name and some by file type. Because I chose such a poor method of archiving those files, there could be anything in there. Is it safe to unzip those files, scan them and then just get rid of what is problematic or are the entire archives now corrupt? I'm also concerned that, with the way I back my computer up that some of the files in those archives may be numerous places on cd/dvd.. etc.

As far as the computer and how it is performing, there seems to be a noticeable increase in speed. The browsers are no longer defaulting to proxy settings. I am actually getting relevant and real results without being forwarded a few times to ad sites. And.. the floppy and cd drive are no longer engaging every time I open my browser. I apologize for the novel. Brevity is something I need practice at obviously.

ComboFix deleted those zip files, I can get them out of quarantine for you if you wish

let me know what you want to do, if the source of those files are from torrents or p2p then there are likely a number of infected files in there, so you would have to upload the zipped file to scan it, but then it likely wont specifically pin point which files are infected. You would be taking a risk by unzipping the files to scan them, but it's up to you.

I feel like a file hoarder by asking but I would probably feel more comfortable if I took a look what was in there, at least. I doubt there is any p2p or torrent action going on in there. While I have, in the distant past, used bit torrent, limewire, and Napster, it has really only been out of sheer curiosity and never has been my cup of tea. Losing that kind of stuff, if I have any, would not hurt my feelings. I am just worried about losing projects I have been working on or photos of my family etc. Or even possibly a program I wrote myself. The only files I am worried about are:

F:\f\hp.zip
F:\f\program files\c.zip
F:\f\program files\u.zip
F:\f\DocumentsAndSettings\owner\desktop\keepers\family\Tina\desk\exe.zip

HI

That's no problem, we can restore those files, please do the following:

Click Start>Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

C:\Qoobox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt

A report should pop open for you. Please post the contents in your next reply.
