Hello,

I have Window XP with service pack 3, My defenses (besides Windows Firewall) are
Avast 6.0.1125 version 110512-1
MBAM 6247 1.50.1.1100 (haven't updated since 4-2-2011)
SAS 4.50.1002 (haven't updated since 3-24-2011)

I've had a virus keeping me off the web for a little while, but today after rkill and a system restore, I was able to access the internet again and update my Avast. I did a full boot time scan, but found no infections. I still can't access Malwarebytes website or SuperAntiSpyware website. I can access Avast's website, but it shows up with an error on the page and it's all blue letters on a white background. I can run and scan MBAM, but when I try to update, I get a message "PROGRAM ERROR UPDATING error code 12007,0,WinHttp Send Request". I can open SAS, but when I try to update it, I get a message that I should check my firewall. When I try to scan with SAS my computer freezez after about a minute or two.

Another thing (related or not?) when I turn on my computer, I get an error message (leftover from a previous infection) "RUNDLL error loading C:\Windows\egoluyetof.dll The specified module could not be found".

Thank you and have a great day.

Below is my DDS Log and I've attached the other one

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Please do not PM me directly for help. If you have any questions, post them in this topic.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Thanks ST, I really appreciate your help. My Avast is updating hourly. I still can't access Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware websites. Two nights ago, my wife got a fake anti-malware popup. We haven't had one of those for a while. I haven't run any scans since my first posting and I've copied the Rootkit Unhooker and OTL reports to this one. Thank you again for helping.

I ran the OTL Fix and pasted the results below. I get the same error message as before when trying to update MBAM. Avast still updates automatically to the most recent version, but I can still access Avast's home page, not their forums; and I still cannot access Malwarebytes website. I can access SuperAntiSpyware now (I did not try to update SAS, though). My computer starts a lot more quickly. Pages load a lot more quickly now, too.

I just had another fake anti-malware popup. I saw this one, it was called "eset" or something similar.

Lets do this to restore your connection:

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections
Select your Local Network.
Click Properties, then select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Click Properties.

You will see a window titled Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties.

Click on Use the following DNS server addresses:
Preferred DNS server: 8.8.8.8
Alternate DNS server: 8.8.4.4

Click OK.

NEXT:

Flush DNS
  • Now go to Start > Run > type: cmd
  • Press OK or Hit Enter.
  • At the command prompt, type or copy/paste: ipconfig /flushdns (note the space between “..g /f…” it needs to be there)
  • Hit Enter.
  • You will get a confirmation that the flush was successful.
  • Close the command box.

Reboot your computer and see how things are working after doing the above.

Great! Malwarebytes just updated, SAS updated, and internet explorer seems to be working fine. The computer still takes a lot more time to start up than it had been.

Hi!

Update Adobe Reader
Earlier versions of Adobe Reader have known security flaws so it is recommended that you update your copy
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
  • Remove ALL instances of Adobe Reader
  • Re-boot your computer as required.
  • Once ALL versions of Adobe Reader have been uninstalled, visit: <<here>> and download the latest version of Adobe Reader
Alternative Option: after uninstalling Adobe Reader, you could try installing Foxit Reader from >here< Foxit Reader has fewer add-ons therefore loads more quickly.

Hello,

Thank you for your help.

I couldn't remove adobe reader 9.4.2, I got a message: "this patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package." I do have an Adobe update ready to install icon in my task bar. Other than that, everything seems to be working OK.

I ran the OTL scan and here are the results:

Hi!

ugh.. Adobe can be a real pain!

Lets try removing it this way:

RevoUninstaller
Download and install Revo Uninstaller
  • Double click the Revo Uninstaller icon on your desktop to start the program
  • Scroll through the listed programs and Right Click on the program you wish to uninstall
  • From the pop out menu choose Uninstall
  • Click Yes to the confirmation dialogue
  • In the next window select the Advanced mode
  • Click Next to start uninstalling the program
  • Answer Yes to confirm the uninstall
  • When the program has completed the four steps, click Next to allow the program to search for leftovers
  • Once complete, click Next, then Finish
  • Repeat the above steps for any other programs you wish to remove.

If that doesn't work try this:

Please proceed with running the Adobe Reader removal. After it loads run RevoUninstaller and click on the Hunter Mode button. You should see a bulls-eye appear on your screen. Click and drag it onto the Adobe Reader window. When the drop down menu appears click on Uninstall. See if that will allow you to remove it.
