Hello,

I recently removed malware of a fake virus scanner in safe mode. After restarting I am now unable to open .exe files such as firefox, malwarebytes, etc., and instead I am prompted to "Choose the program you want to use to open this file." If I right click and "Run as Administrator" the file will load properly.

Attached are DDS logs and GMER logs.

Thank you,
Eric

Hi,

Please log in into the account where exe files won't run.
Then, make sure extensions are shown, see here how to do this.
Then, navigate to the C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Antimalware folder and locate the file mbam.exe in there
Rename mbam.exe to mbam.com
Then, doubleclick mbam.com. This will allow malwarebytes to open. First use the update tab and check if there are updates. Download the updates.
Then, perform a quick scan and let Malwarebytes remove what it found. Reboot afterwards.

Post the log from Malwarebytes in your next reply together with a new DDS log.

Can you also post the log from Malwarebytes please?
Are you able to run exe files now?

Hi,

Did you run Malwarebytes from the infected account as explained in above? (first renamed to mbam.com) and NOT run as administrator? Because malwarebytes does find this and fixes this though. That's why it has to be run from the profile where exe's won't run, not as admin.
I also wonder if your version of malwarebytes may be outdated. That's why I asked for the log.

Anyway, please do the following..

* Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix..This because Security Software may see some components ComboFix uses (prep.com for example) as suspicious and blocks the tool, or even deletes it. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.

Hello,

Yes, I ran this as .com and as administrator both. By running "As administrator" meaning you right click and select that option, not on a separate log in. My account is the only user on the account anyway. The only problem with updating Malwarebytes with either .com or "Run as admin" option is that it will update, but want to restart itself to apply these updates and fails because of the .exe problem. However, on my update screen it shows 5/12/11 as the current version. I am at work at the moment so will need to go home to run combofix.

Thank you,
Eric

Hi,

It looks like you are using an older malwarebytes version, which explains why it doesn't detect this.
That's why I suggest you download the latest version from here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Then, before you install it, rename the installer with a .com extension.
Then install Malwarebytes. Then also rename the mbam.exe to mbam.com and run again (not as administrator)
