I've had McAfee for years. My son repeatedly says not to use it; to use Avast and Malwarebytes instead. So I deleted McAfee, downloaded Avast (already had Malwarebytes but didn't use it), and ran scans. Avast says I have two Rootkit hidden files. I set the "action" to delete for both, then it says "Action postponed until the next reboot". I reboot, rescan, and they're still there. I've tried the "boot-time scan" (which restarts the computer and lets Avast scan before Windows starts), and when it finishes, it says it's all clear. But then, I run the full scan again and they're still there. I should say I've not noticed any problems on my computer from these "infections"; however, when I researched "Rootkits", everything says they're horribly dangerous, which is how I found this site. Please, some advice?

Hello and welcome.
It's possible it has cleaned it. We can tell by seeing where it says it is it the latest Avast log. Copy/paste that secion here so we cab determine it. It should look something like this....
C:\Documents and Settings\Adam Socha\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\7\7d40e887-6d495e50 multiple threats deleted - quarantined
C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\6\79ea2406-5a71b8a3 multiple threats deleted - quarantined
C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Local Settings\Temp\PDF3CC.tmp PDF/Exploit.Pidief.PDS.Gen trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined

I also agree with this Avast/MBAM setup.

Also please run an MBAM scan after you copy the avast log.
Post that log here also.
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.

The Avast log doesn't let me highlight or copy it. I thought I could upload a screenshot but don't see any way to do that. The log says:
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\vmgr68fa.tmp\UpdateInfo.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\vmgr702.tmp\UpdateInfo.dll
Both say "High Severity" and "Threat: Rootkit: hidden file"

Following is the MBAM log:

Hello, there was no option to Clean, delete,or quaratine these?

Let's do 2 things .. a rootkit scan.
Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.5.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to these instructions. In some cases it may be necessary to redownload TDSSKiller and randomly rename it before downloading and saving to the computer.

Now rerun MBAM as that version is very old.

Rerun MBAM (MalwareBytes) like this:

Open MBAM in normal mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates, when done
click Scanner tab, select Quick scan and scan (normal mode).
After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log
and Reboot into normal mode.

Please ask any needed questions, post logs and Let us know how the PC is running now.

There are options to: Repair, Delete, Move to Chest, Do Nothing.
I tried the chest but it won't take it. I did the delete action 4 times (after 4 full scans). When you do the action, it gives a msg that the action is postponed until the next reboot. I've done 4 subsequent boot-time scans, and they each show "no virus found". But then a regular, full follow-up scan shows the two still in there.

Btw, I also told the computer to show hidden files and went in and looked for this file, to perhaps manually delete. It did not show under the location given.

Anyway, I'll print your instructions and do these things. I forgot about updating the Malwarebytes program. It's been sitting on my computer unused for years, while I used McAfee. (I've removed McAfee now.)

I'll do your actions and report the results tomorrow (won't get the printed stuff until late tonight.)

Ok we have arootkit in the System Restore folder and we'll get that last. Did you try moving the Avast items to the vault?

MBAM is still too old.
1. Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware using Add/Remove programs in the control panel.
2. Restart your computer (very important).
3. Download and run this utility. Mbam clean
4. It will ask to restart your computer (please allow it to).
5. After the computer restarts, install the latest version from here. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php
Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent.
Note: If using Free version, ignore the part about putting in your license key and activating.
Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration.
Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray and run a Quick Scan and post that log.

Avast has a "chest". I did attempt to move the items to there and get the msg:
"Error: The request is not supported"

For the new downloaded Malwarebytes program, it is not in the task tray (was not offered as an option), but is on the desktop. Here's the log:

Perha[s there is a piece of old junk affecting your Avast. (free I am thinking). if so remove both and rinstall Avast.

Download and save a new copy of ĽAvast Free to the dektop.

Run McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool: MCPR.exe

Avast Uninstall Utility: awsClear.exe

Install the new Avast

I was just coming back to tell you I went to the Avast site and clicked on their link. I had to do it in safe mode, but it worked. I installed a new Avast and have just started running a full scan.
I was actually thinking the same thing ... that the problem may just be that msg stuck in (the old) Avast program somehow. I'll let you know.
Thanks so much for sticking with me through this!!!
I didn't know about uninstalling programs using other software. I knew that, although I'd uninstalled McAfee, there were still files in my computer. Now, the folders are there, but they say they're empty. Can I/should I delete the folders? They're in C, WINDOWS, Temp.
