Hello. first time poster, recent Bleeping Computer reader. I've got a Win 7, 64 bit machine. Run AVG free suite on it since day 1. Run MBAM on it for a year.

- On 5/3, my AVG on a prior version ran scan to completion with no errors, issues, or findings.

- On 5/8, AVG updated my version to 10.0.1375, and auto-ran a computer check. It came back with 18 rootkits identified, but no files named/listed for those rootkits (see attached). I clicked the "heal infections" or some such choice related to AVG and the 18 found, and it appeared to work just fine in healing the items, no BSODs. Rebooted my machine, then ran AVG again on a "rootkit" sweep specifically, zero infections on that report..

I ran the GMER tool under the name "GMER", no findings.

I ran Malicious Software Removal Tool from Microsoft, no findings.

- On 5/9, I booted up my PC in safe mode, ran AVG 10.0.1375 full scan and MBAM full scan with my prior settings to completion - no findings.

- today, 5/10, saved the GMER.exe as "tool.exe" and reran in full Windows mode. had findings (see attached).
I started to download ComboFix but said "no" at agreeing to the terms and conditions. did not complete CF install, have no CF logs.
I downloaded and added 'Microsoft Security Essentials' to run a second opinion style check to the computer, disabled AVG's Resident Shield after MSE install.
I also downloaded and added Trend Micro Hijack This 2.04 (see attached).
Updated and ran MBAM which says I have "heuristics.shuriken" in "ymsgr.exe" Yahoo messenger downloaded many many moons ago on a prior PC.

HJT identifies an AVG listing as a Rootkit (see attached).
AVG still finds zero rootkits since the May 8th finding and cleanup.

after starting the ComboFix process but saying not, as well as MSE and HJT, noted the following new folders on my root C: directory "VC_Red", "Qoobox", "Windows".

Some other threads on other sites suggest some of these items are false positives in the mix here with AVG 10.0.1375. Help please, and thank you!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Please take note:

  • If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know.
  • If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • If you are unable to perform the steps we have recommended please try one more time and if unsuccessful alert us of such and we will design an alternate means of obtaining the necessary information.
  • If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.
  • If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
  • Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

Casey

If I have been helping you and I do not reply within 48hours, feel free to send me a PM.

I can't say it's resolved or not. I ended my checks myself that night I posted feeling like they were likely false positives. I read up more on Heuristic screening and navigated to the alleged Shuriken file. it was a Yahoo Messenger installer buried in an old folder I'd copied over with some data files from an earlier PC. It's date stamp was like the year 2000, given MBAM's designation of it being a Heuristic Shuriken I figured it would flag anything with the name ysmgr.exe as a problem, regardless of any other properties, time stamp, etc. of the device. I allowed MBAM to purge the file with no problems or observed consequences. I do not have Yahoo Messenger download and running on this machine.

I also attempted some searches around the folders I saw appear on my root directory that night. Each appears connected to the different apps. I was trying that night like GMER, HJT, CF, etc. - to either be a "temp" style folder that should have deleted off through normal install processes, or a resident folder that ought to exist if I had the proper version (I mistakenly grabbed a win 7, 32 bit OS version of two of the attempted programs which cancelled out on the attempted install).

As requested I ran the DDS and am inserting the DDS text here, and attaching the Attach text file. Hopefully that is the process you were looking for. I can get the computer to boot up fine, reach the desktop, etc. so didn't have any need to provide other more general information Casey asked for preceding the DDS, if DDS could not be run.
It is a 64 bit OS machine so I skipped the GMER step as instructed.

Hi,

No infection related signs there. Some programs like Adobe Reader needs updating though. If no other issues I recommend to install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) and fix its findings.

Also, you have both Microsoft Security Essentials & AVG installed there. It's recommended to have one antivirus product installed only.
