[SOLVED]

I was recently given a used Lenova computer that had previously had Vista installed on it but had been wiped clean.

I installed Vista again and the ethernet card worked fine. There was only 447MB of RAM and the system was very sluggish. I replaced Vista with a clean copy of XP Professional to get a fast running system and the problem began. The ethernet card would not install.

I should mention that the onboard ethernet had stopped working at some point and a card had been added to replace it.

After days of trying to fix the problem, I decided to reinstall Vista since it had worked before.

You guessed it!!! NOW it DOESN'T work this way either!!!

After beating my head against the wall trying to download drivers for one computer from a much newer computer I came across you guys.

Now for the technical stuff (what there is of it since I have no documentation for the machine)

The markings on the case say Lenova. The motherboard has no markings except a S/N which the Lenova website says is invalid. The information under System is that it has an AMD Sempron™ Processor 3600+ 2.00GHz on a 32-bit Operating System.

Welcome to Bleepingcomputer.

I realize your major issue is that you can not get on line, so if you can somehow get this file called SPeccy on the computer with no Internet, follow through with its install, then get the resulting file on a computer that can get on line and post the text in your next reply making sure your windows product key is not in the text we can offer you a suitable driver.

How To Publish a Snapshot using Speccy

Guide Overview

The purpose of this guide is to teach you how to post your computer's specifications to the forum with minimal effort on your part. This is often helpful when troubleshooting problems, and the person helping you needs to see the details of your computer's hardware.

Tools Needed
  • Speccy - First, you will need a program called Speccy. According to Piriform: "Speccy is an advanced system information tool for your PC." This is a very useful utility that every PC user should have in their arsenal.

Instructions
  • Go to Piriform's website, and click the big Posted Image button.

Next, click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version.

You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.
  • After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
  • Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):
    Posted Image

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot

You will see the following prompt:
    Posted Image

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

    Posted Image

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the Posted Image button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Congrats! You have just posted your specs!

Thanks.

Bruce.

It appears the report did not give enough information to work with.

I do not know if we are working with a laptop or a desk top computer, but I believe we are working with a desktop here.

According to the Lenovo web site there should be a label on either the lower right corner on the side panel or it is on the back of the tower, there should be a serial number there, can you give me as much information as possible?

The serial number could look something like this: It is a combination of 10-digital letters and numbers, i.e. SS12345678

There are two different types of desk tops.

There is ThinkCentre, NetVista, Value Line.

There should be a label with the words TYPE and S/N

There is also Value Line and IdeaCentre Desktops

They should have a 10 digit letter and number code such as SS12345678

Thanks in advance.

Bruce.

Well... I can tell you that it's a desktop. The label on the side only says: MT-M: 9686-A12, then S/N: LKAGNLX.

The serial numbers for Lenovo can be 7, 10, or 12 characters. [see link] http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-49QTT6&sitestyle=lenovo

I'm sure glad to have found this place. I was a computer tech before 3 strokes basically demolished that. Now, to occupy our time & minds, my partner & I take in used computers, software & bits & pieces. We refurbish & upgrade them as much as possible. Then we place them with seniors or low income families without computers and teach them the basics. Sometimes however, I just can't find my way around problems that use to be a snap. Maybe now that I found this place I won't feel like I'm beating my head against a wall quite so often.

Thank you.

Hope that helps some.

Also, since this computer was running so slow & I don't have any of this type of RAM to add to it, I would like to have it running with XP if that can happen. If not, then Vista it will be.

Thankyou.

If it not to much of problem to answer, can you please post what exactly solved your problem?

Was it the drivers I suggested above or was there something else you did to resolve the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Bruce.

Very good, glad I was able to help you and I hope you continue to use Bleepingcomputer as your main resource of information, there is just so much information you can gain from this forum board, I just can not list them all in one reply. :)

Kind regards as always.....

Siuan I asked a Moderator to join your two separate posts together in one thread, the link DC3 posted is to this topic before they were joined together like they are now.

Hope this did not confuse you in any way, below is my answers to your questions.

Kind regards.

Bruce.

Hello I had your topic merged together since we are working on the same machine here and it is better to keep things in one topic so any one helping of reading this topic will find it easier to follow.

With that being said...lets move on.

First off, great job on posting your speccy screen shot, it was very helpful and you did okay with following the instructions.

Now lets get with finding those missing drivers.

Your computer obviously has some age on it being that your Sound Blaster sound card which is the following: Creative AudioPCI (ES1370), SB PCI 64/128.

The link below is to the driver for this device, I want to add support for this device has expired, but here are still drivers available for it.

Check the link below.

http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=1&subCatID=207&prodID=1865&prodName=Sound Blaster PCI 64&subCatName=Others&CatName=Sound+Blaster&VARSET=prodfaq:PRODFAQ_1865,VARSET=CategoryID:1

Edit: Sorry that link above has to be copied and pasted into a browser for it to work

This is the download link below, just agree to the terms of the license and click download.

http://support.creative.com/downloads/download.aspx?nDownloadId=1843

Be right back with the next set of drivers.

Bruce.
