Boopme had me run DDS. I also tried to run GMER but it wouldn't (Application Not Found). I tried to make sure that the Windows Firewall was on, but when I clicked on it in the Control Panel it gave an error msg and "Application not found"

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Hi Gringo - thanks for your help! Since my last post I've experienced a major problem (forgive my descriptions as I'm not particularly PC savvy). I can't open most applications as when I try to I get an error message that says "application not found". Sometimes I get a pop-up window that asks me to "choose the program that you want to use to open the file". I also notice that most of the icons in my system tray (lower right of screen) have disappeared. Ugh!

I did the things you noted and results are attached. With both Rootkiller and Defogger I ran into the "application not found" problem but was able to figure out how to direct Windows to the program file.

Thanks!

Bruce

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

AVG right now is very hard to shut down long enough to run our scans and is actively going after some of our tools - for this reason we are going to have to remove it until we are finished

I would like you to uninstall AVG and run their AVG removal tool - 32 bit

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Problems... problems...

I removed AVG, made sure that antivirus is off, then downloaded Combofix. Problem now is that I can't run Combofix - at first it says "file not found", then if I go to downloads and try to run from there windows asks me to identify the program to open it with and I get stuck in a loop. I point it toward the CF file, click OK, and it just goes back to the same windows popup. I can't get out, and end up with multiple of the same windows popups open. I notice that the windows message asks what program to open the file with, but notes that the file is "iexplore.exe" rather than something related to combofix.

I also notice that Firefox won't go to www.bleepingcomputer.com. I have to get to this message board in a roundabout manner.

thx

Sorry but I'm not sure what you mean - when I click on the links you supplied to download the file, it immediately downloads to the "downloads" file, not my desktop. I don't know how to "save it to the desktop" as you mention as I don't see an option to do so...

Thx -

OK, saved to desktop and tried to run - same thing happens. Looks like it tries to open (there's an icon with bars that increment up), then I get back to the "open with" menu. Thx

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

kerror Valid command line parameters -l -qpath -qall etc.

Try this and see if it helps

Scan with exeHelper:

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.

  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Interesting development - Firefox shut down, now it's running what looks like a fake spam scanner called "XP Total Security" and is preventing me from opening either firefox or IE (I'm on a different computer).
