My budget for the new computer is:
$500-$1000

What are the primary uses for this computer (IE: mail, web browsing, programming, games, etc)?
web browsing, word processing, programming, multimedia playback, video conferencing

What software do you intend on using on the computer?
Windows 7
Microsoft Office/Open Office
oovoo/skype
firefox/chrome
R & associated GUIs
Media Monkey
Citrix
Google Earth
ARC-GIS
And one exceptionally ancient DOS-based program from 1989

Do you play games? If so, what type of games?
Not really. Occasionally online chess.

Do you tend to have a lot of programs running at the same time, or do you close every program when you are done using it?
Almost always open: oovoo/skype and firefox. Often open: R and word processing/spreadsheets. Would like the laptop to be able to handle a separate monitor too.

Do you store a lot of pictures or music on the computer?
~20GB music and ~10GB pictures.
