Good Morning,

Last week quietman7 helped me tremendously to get rid of a TDSS rootkit on my Mom's computer. However, after removing it there's 3 issues that I need assistance with for one of the user accounts on the computer.

1) On one of the user accounts Firefox will not run. When I try launching FF I get a message that says, "The Proxy server is refusing connections."

2) When I first try logging into the account I get 2 pop up windows. The first one reads, "Windows cannot find 'C:DOCUME~1\CHRIST~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\dwm.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

After I close that window, another window pops up saying, "Could not load or run 'C:DOCUME~1\CHRIST~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\dwm.exe' specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry."

I asked her about the messages yesterday and she said its been happening for quite a while so I'm not sure if it's affiliated with the rootkit at all.

3) After the rootkit removal I keep getting a Windows Security Alert saying Automatic Updates isn't enabled when I've set it up to run automatically so I know it's there. This is universal across all user accounts.

To try to fix issue #3 I attempted to Follow quietman7's instructions:

For Automatic Updates, ensure the service is started and set to automatic.

Press the Windows Key + R keys on your keyboard or go to Posted Image > Run..., and in the Open dialog box, type: services.msc
Click OK or press Enter.
Click the Extended tab at the bottom to view all the info on your services.
Scroll down the list and find the service called Automatic Updates.
When you find the service, double-click on it or right-click and choose Properties.
In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the Start button.
From the drop-down menu next to Startup Type, click on Automatic.
Click Apply, then OK and close any open windows.

I couldn't find Automatic Updates in the list of Services for some reason.

To try to fix issues #1 and #2 I've run Malwarebytes, Spybot, Avira, and ESET. Friday evening was the last time I ran all the programs. ESET found and cleaned 1 file. Malwarebytes full scan found a few files that day and Avira found a file. All were removed. Friday morning was when I removed the TDSS rootkit. So after Friday evening my scans were coming back clean. This morning I ran Malwarebytes quickscan and Spybot and still clean and did system restart and still have same issues.

Below is the DDS log I generated this morning from a different user account than the one where I can't launch FF.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Please do not PM me directly for help. If you have any questions, post them in this topic.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Good Morning ST,

Per your instructions, I have downloaded and run the 2 programs. Below are the logs.

Also am still experiencing same 3 issues from original post. Issue 3 is still there but there used to be a small Windows Security Alert pop up that would say Automatic Updates isn't enabled. That isn't there anymore. Not sure when that went away as I rarely use this computer. In any case, I think the issue is still there because in Security Center from Control Panel it says it's off, but I've enabled it via System in Control Panel.

Good Morning MikeyFl!

I'll link you to a Microsoft Support Article to try something they suggest there.

Disable SpyBot TeaTimer
We need to disable Spybot S&D's "TeaTimer"
TeaTimer works by preventing ANY changes to the system. It will attempt to undo any fixes we run, because it blocks these fixes from running.

In order to safeguard your system from problems that can be brought on by a half finished fix, we need to disable TeaTimer. We can reenable it when we're done if you like.
  • Open SpyBot Search and Destroy by going to Start -> All Programs -> Spybot Search and Destroy -> Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • If prompted with a legal dialog, accept the warning.
  • Click Posted Image and then on "Advanced Mode"
    Posted Image
  • You may be presented with a warning dialog. If so, press Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image
  • Uncheck this checkbox:
    Posted Image
  • Close/Exit Spybot Search and Destroy

OK. So we've cleared item #2. Still have Items 1 and 3. With item 3 I notice a pop up that says, "No Firewall is turned on. Automatic Updates turned off." The firewall is on when I check in control panel, and automatic updates still set correctly.

Here are the logs:

Almost there I think. I'm not getting the Automatic Updates pop up updates after running the Microsoft MixIt in Default and Aggressive mode...which is great! The reason I ran Aggressive mode is I'm still receiving the, "No Firewall is turned on", message. The odd part is it's only there after a fresh system restart and it's there for 10-15 seconds. During that time if I try to access the Firewall I get a message that says, "Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall Settings." In the Security Center it also says Firewall is off. Then after the 10-15 seconds the pop up disappears and I can access the Firewall and in the Security Center I can see it's on.

Before we do anything else. Lets create a back-up of the registry.

Back-Up Registry
First, we need to backup your registry:
Please go to Start > Run
Paste in the following line:

regedit /e c:\registrybackup.reg

Click OK.
It won't appear to be doing anything, that's normal.
Your mouse pointer may turn to an hour glass for a minute.
Please continue when it no longer has the hour glass.

____________________________________________________

Please try creating it yourself using this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920074

Look underneath: Method 2: Add the Windows Firewall entry to the registry

OK I created Windows Firewall entry and now I'm not getting any pop-ups now which is definitely a relief...but after I restart the system and double-click the firewall icon, I'm receiving the same message "Due to an unidentified problem...". Message disappears after 10-15 seconds like before.

ESET came back 0 infected and 0 cleaned. I couldn't locate a button to paste the log here though.

Hi MikeyFl!

Please try this:

Go to Start > Run > Copy/Paste the following bolded text followed by ENTER: regsvr32 hnetcfg.dll

Java Outdated
Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform.
    • 32-bit Select: Windows x86 Offline.
    • 64-bit Select: Windows x64.
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u25-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.
-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

NEXT

Update Adobe Reader
Earlier versions of Adobe Reader have known security flaws so it is recommended that you update your copy
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
  • Remove ALL instances of Adobe Reader
  • Re-boot your computer as required.
  • Once ALL versions of Adobe Reader have been uninstalled, visit: <<here>> and download the latest version of Adobe Reader
Alternative Option: after uninstalling Adobe Reader, you could try installing Foxit Reader from >here< Foxit Reader has fewer add-ons therefore loads more quickly.

NEXT:

OTL Custom Scan

We need to run an OTL Custom Scan
  • Please reopen Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the following code into the Posted Image textbox.

    netsvcs
    drivers32
    hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /rs
    %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\*.* /s
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Install|LastSuccessTime /rs

  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • A report will open. Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.
