Hi there.

My PC was recently infected by the XP Antispyware malware. Firefox was being hijacked and I was getting endless fake Windows pop-ups like those linked to on this page. Also Iexplore.exe was starting by itself at startup but running in the background. After a while it would ''encounter a problem and have to close''.

I did scans (normal boot, not safe mode) with Malwarebytes, Spybot S+D, Super Antispyware and Avira. MBAM found and removed a couple of trojans and Spybot found and removed a few innocent looking tracking cookies.
Next I started getting security centre warnings about Automatic updates being turned off... ''click here to resolve this... Unable to resolve. Please visit control panel/system/automatic updates tab to try changing these settings yourself''. So I turn on auto updates (down load and install automatically) but it still shows as being off in security centre.
So I did full scans in safe mode which brought up some other issues to do with Java and system restore which were also resolved seemingly without issue.
Next thing was Avira was disabled and I was unable to initiate scans and Windows Explorer was hanging on startup. A re install of Avira and a system restore seems to have sorted these issues but because of the previous system restore issue I'm not convinced my system is fully cleared of the results of the XP Antispyware infection.

Could someone please have a look through my HJT log as I'm not sure where else to go from here.

Here is my HJT log...

Update;

Ok so it looks like I was being over optimistic. After re booting I find I'm still getting the explorer and Avira issues. After booting the desktop appears as usual but the taskbar is either grey with blue boxes where the clock and start buttons should be or there is just a blue line underneath the desktop. If I click on a desktop icon I can highlight it but that's all. Double click does not open the file/folder and clicking another icon does nothing. The previously highlighted icon remains selected. It looks like explorer is frozen. Avira is also disabled. I can get to windows task manger via ctrl/alt/del. This shows less than the usual number of processes running. Maybe 5 missing but not sure which. I can restart from task manager and boot into safe mode where explorer seems to be working as normal. I can select and open files/folders as normal but Avira is stil disabled. When I try to start it or to scan a file I get the message ''Unable to find C\program files\Avira\antivir Desktop\ccplg.xml.'' or another message saying something like the module aecore.dll could not be started. I'm able to access System restore where I notice the option to create a restore point is missing but am able to select a previous restore point. After restoring, upon restarting, explorer is working properly. The taskbar is visible and I can select/open files and folders but Avira is still not working. If I re install Avira at this point it works again. If I then reboot the machine I get back to having the same problems with explorer and Avira. Yes, I know I'm probably re loading the malware each time I use system restore. The solution is to remove the malware but all the scans I do now are coming up clean so I don't know here to look. Is there anything in the HJT log?

Hi Gringo, many thanks for your response.

Just to confirm, do I need to perform the above steps while in safe mode or am I to use system restore to enable me to use the PC in normal boot mode? Perhaps it doesn't matter either way?

Thanks

David

Hi Gringo,

Ok I have followed your instructions and all seems to have gone smoothly.
I booted the machine into safe mode and ran Defogger and DDS after ensuring there were no antivirus/malwares running. Defogger did its thing and gave me a screen saying it had finished. I closed the program.
I ran DDS which began by asking me to disable any script blockers. I don't think I have anything like that running so I just let the program run.
There was a note saying the log named Attach must be zipped and then attached to a forum post rather than posted directly. Seeing as you had specifically asked me to post it in my reply I have copied it from notepad and posted it below while also attaching a .zip file.

I then ran system restore, restoring to the last available restore point. After restoring I noticed some files I had moved from the desktop to a new folder while in safe mode to make room for DDS/RKU to be moved from my flash drive had reappeared. Also Defogger, DDS and RKU which I'm sure I'd left on the desktop in safe mode were not visible. Perhaps changes made to the location of files in safe mode are not saved and carried over to normal boot?
I also saw a warning regarding Avira... ''Unable to find C:\program files\avira\antivir desktop\ccplg.xml. Avira does not start.

Anyway I was able to run Rootkit Unhooker without any problem and did not see any warnings.

Logs are below...

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi Gringo,

I tried running Combofix in safe mode and it gave me a warning saying it had detected Antivir Desktop real time scanning as being active and I should disable this before continuing. I checked running processes using Process Explorer but there are no processes related to Avira running so I have nothing to disable. Is it possible Antivir is running invisibly or is combofix just telling me it has seen Antivir on the machine, that I should make sure it's disabled and then run the scan. I'm guessing as there are no visible Avira processes running it's ok for me to just run the scan but I'll wait for your reply before doing that.

Thanks

David

Hi Gringo,

So I set the combofix scan off and left the machine for a while. When I returned there was a a log file waiting so I presume it has completed without any trouble.

I tried to post the log in this reply but it seems the log is too long to be included here. I have attached it as a .txt file. I hope this is ok.

I rebooted the machine into normal mode without using system restore. Explorer seems to be working now and the taskbar is appearing as normal. I'm still getting the warning from Avira but that should stop if I re install the program which I will do tomorrow.

One strange thing... When I went to switch off via start/turn off computer, the panel that appears with the options to stand by, turn off or restart was showing updates were ready to be installed, with the option at the bottom of the panel to turn off without installing updates. I'm sure this was not there the last time the machine was online so how did it find new updates to install?
I turned it off without installing anything.

The other thing is my wireless connection appears to be broken. I will investigate this further and report back tomorrow.

Many thanks

David

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

1. click on start
2. then go to settings
3. after that you need control panel
4. look for the icon add/remove programs
click on the following programs

Adobe Reader 7.0.9

and click on remove

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Greetings

try the downloads with IE or try to uninstall firefox and reinstall

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTHelper] CTHELPER.EXE
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [uTorrent] "C:\Program Files\uTorrent\utorrent.exe"
      O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [FlashPlayerUpdate] C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\FlashUtil10p_Plugin.exe -update plugin
      O4 - Startup: AutorunsDisabled
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

NOTE**You can research each of those lines >here< and see if you want to keep them or not
just copy the name between the brakets and paste into the search space
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelliPoint]

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan - Vista and win 7 right click on IE shortcut and run as admin

Go Eset web page to run an online scannner from ESET.

  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • click on the ESET Online Scanner button
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
    • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options
Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Click on copy to clipboard and paste the results here in this topic
  • you may also find here C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Hi Gringo,

Yes, I'd thought to try reinstalling Firefox but it made no difference. Will try with IE, fix start up and run Eset tomorrow. Unfortunately I have to go to work for now :-(

Many thanks

David

Hi Gringo,

I got finished work :-)

I was able to d/l TFC using IE but am still having the same problem with Firefox and Java updates. I checked Avira and that updates ok so the d/l issue seems to be specific to Firefox and Java. As I said, reinstalling Firefox had no effect.

I have run TFC and will set Eset off before going to sleep and post the log from that in the morning.
