What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

EXACTLY what happens when you boot the system?

Hi,
I am speaking as a member, not as a malware trainee.

Since you can get the task manager:
Start Task Manager
Click the Applications Tab
Click the button the says New Task
In the window that open type 'explorer.exe', (without the quotes) click Okay

This should open up the desktop.

Vista:
Open the task manager
Click the Applications Tab
Select File in the menu bar
Select and click New Task (Run..)
Type in 'explorer.exe', (without the quotes) click Okay

Windows 7, should be similar to Vista.

If you can get the desktop open then open M-bam, be sure to update it by clicking the Update tab and Update button, and run a quick scan. Select Remove All, and restart as needed. Post the log, a qualified member of the MRT should be here soon, if you do not get a response within three days, there is a thread for notification at the top of this forum.
