So, I got some nasty virus three days ago and removed it myself as per bleepings instructions (it was one of the false Windows Security ones, but I can't recall the name since there have been a hundred since, it feels), and even ran the "unhide" program, but all of the files in my start menu are still listed as empty.

Additionally, I realized after a few days of constant reinfection that my firewall and virus protection had been turned off. I turned everything on and am current updating windows, but after all-clear scans from MBAM and S&D and SuperAS, I'm still getting Google redirects, still have empty start menu files, and still get random Internet Explorer script error pop-ups (despite being in Firefox, even though I can't find Firefox in my files and IE is suddenly the unchangeable default browser).

Ugh! Help?

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<==. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Then post your DDS and GMER logs as a reply to this topic. Once you have done that I will remove my reply and consolidate the posts so that you retain your correct place in the queue.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the reply and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

Couldn't get the GMER log. About 20 minutes into the scan, the entire computer went bluescreen with an error and then shut down before I could get any of the information on the screen. It took me about 15 minutes to get it to restart in safe mode (it will not load at all in last known good settings, just goes to the startup screen and stays there).

Posting this from my other computer now.

Hi,

If help still needed post fresh dds logs + a description of current issues, please.

Right now, as of yesterday morning, my computer restarted and took about 45 minutes to boot up. When it finally opened, the start menu was gone. Explorer is still running. I cannot access the internet from the computer and it won't run any programs at all. I can't run dds on the computer and it won't recognize any of my flash drives.

Ideas?

edit: it looks like I can open dds (it took about 15 minutes to pull up after I clicked on it) and will try and figure out a way to post a log when it finishes.

Hi,

I'm sorry but I don't touch those logs uploaded to file sharing places. It should be ok to archive ComboFix log into a zip file and attach it to your post.

Hi,

Click start and type services.msc and press enter. Check that Cryptographic Services service is running and its startup type is automatic.

There is no visible start menu on my computer anymore. Is there a way to access this otherwise?

That worked, but after I typed the command, I got a popup:

Hi,

Download GMER here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
  • Double-click .exe that you downloaded
  • Click rootkit-tab, uncheck files option and then click scan.
  • Don't check
    Show All
    box while scanning in progress!
  • When scanning is ready, click Copy.
  • This copies log to clipboard
  • Post log (if the log is long, archive it into a zip file and attach instead of posting) in your reply.
