Hi.

Logged on at my ultra secure work network this morning and needed to check my personal bank account, confronted with a screen that my internet banking had been suspended (when I got home there was also a letter saying the same). Ringing the helpline, I was told that a trojan - probably from a keylogger - had been trying to access my bank account, and until I had a clean computer I could not be reinstated for internet banking and I would have to change all passwords and hints.

I checked my credit card company, and the same message. The guy on the helpline was more useful than the bank, he told me a concerted attempt had been made by a Zeus2 trojan to access my credit card account online yesterday lunchtime. That means a new card, not that's greatly a problem. That was about the time I fired up my home computer as I was working from home at that time. I left the computer alone and attached to the internet while I took my dogs for a walk so it was unattended for about an hour.

I ascertained that as far as was known, no money had been removed, and I immediately changed my password for other sites - Amazon, eBay, PayPal &c. at the work computer.

I'm now sat at my home computer which as far as I can possibly tell can be the only source for this infection. My daughter has a Vista laptop, but swears she has not used it in the past six months - it has been superseded in her affections by an iPad, so I believe her. I have occasionally used my late wife's notepad computer, but not for anything like banking or shopping, and I haven't used it for at least the last week (runs Windows 7, Windows Firewall, AVG). We have an Xbox360, Playstation 3 (eek!! - but that has not been plugged into the internet for a good six months), a Wii, an iPad, iPod Touch, DS, and a couple of phones that all use wifi. A few of those items I will have used bank or credit cards on (for example iTunes or the PSN, or Xbox Live) But logically, this PC can be the only source of the problem.

It is kept up to date with all the XP updates, I have AVG running which updates automatically every boot (can confirm it is right up to date), I have Search and Destroy TeaTimer running, and ZoneAlarm firewall. AVG reported an issue with an infection a few weeks ago, but it wasn't Zeus. AVG cleaned it, and I also ran an updated MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, which also did a clean up. I have diligently run both every few days since then and nothing else has occured.

This afternoon, I have updated and done a full AVG check, a MalWareBytes quick check, a Search and Destroy full check, and downloaded the Windows Malicious Software removal tool. All have reported nothing, though S & D did report that about 20000 files hadn't been checked because of a conflict with AVG. After following the links from this link: http://www.malwarehelp.org/find-and-remove-zeus-zbot-banking-trojan-2009.html I'm now running RUBotted which is reporting nothing.

I use Firefox, not IE.

Which is a roundabout way of asking whether someone would kindly have a look at the logs and tell me if I am indeed infected? I am loath to reinstate internet banking - or indeed do ANYTHING on the internet (!) until I'm certain. I'm definitely confused about the lack of any sort of report from any of the programs I've run this afternoon. And there's no indication of anything untoward happening at the computer - no heavy internet activity, no browser hijacks or anything strange happening.

So: DDS Log:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.
If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about the Windows version you are using: What we in particular need to know is version, edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system. [/b]
If you are unsure about any of these caracteristics, just let us know and we'll help you figuring it out. Please also tell us if you have your Windows CD/DVD handy.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

a quick few general questions:
Did you notice anything indicating malware lately? Is this the only PC on which you have used your credit card and banking information? Do you use a router?

Myrti

Thanks for the reply again.

As I said in the initial post, I have used my card details on various other computers and games consoles. I spoke to the technical expert at my credit card company subsequent to my first post and he said there had only been one instance - the one that they had shut the card down over - of any attempt to access my details. My PC had been on since then, and connected to the internet. His belief was that it was a rogue website of some sort that had tried and that the PC itself was not necessarily infected.

I have a wifi router which is protected by a WEP password.

As said, I did get an infection notice a few weeks ago, but it was not Zeus, and it seemed to be efficiently cleaned by AVG and MalwareBytes. No report of anything untoward since. The PC seems to be operating as normal, and the 'internet activity' monitor of Zone Alarm doesn't seem to be doing anything strange.

Is the PC according to the logs in effect clean?

Hi,

I'm not seeing an indication for a keylogger. But please run a scan with Eset next to check for leftovers:
ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: Posted Image

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Posted Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

WEP is a very unsecure encryption, nowadays. The encryption can be broken in seconds and I would strongly recommend that you upgrade to WPA or WPA2 if your hardweare allows it.

Thanks again. Just to note that I had my removable hard drive (F:) attached which contains backups of various files on the other drives, hence - I guess - the duplicate entries.

E:\Junk\50 pieces of VST plugins.exe

It's a file I downloaded many years ago and has been copied over from my previous PC (hence why it's in a 'Junk' folder). I occasionally use my PC to make music and I needed a VST plugin for a software synthesiser. The file won't have been accessed for at least seven or eight years, and I will delete it.

Hi,

well from your description it may well be a false positive and doesn't need to be removed. The detection of Nero is due to the toolbar it tries to install (you need to opt out), the tool itself is fine. OpenCandy however is usually considered adware and I would advise to remove it.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 25 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u23-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Your version of Adobe Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Adobe components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Adobe Reader Version X. and save it to your desktop.
  • Uncheck the "Free McAfee Security plan Plus" option or any other Toolbar you are offered
  • Click the download button at the bottom.
  • If you use Internet Explorer and do not wish to install the ActiveX element, simply click on the click here to download link on the next page.
  • Remove all older version of Adobe Reader: Go to Add/remove and uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader, Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat.
If you are unsure of how to use Add or Remove Programs, the please see this tutorial:How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer
  • Then from your desktop double-click on Adobe Reader to install the newest version.
If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the "Adobe Setup - Welcome" window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • Once the installation is finished, open Adobe Reader and accept the warranty if prompted.
  • Click on Help and select Check for Updates.
  • A window will open and Adobe will check for Updates. If any updates are found to be available click on Download.
  • Once the update is downloaded you will get a system notification telling you so. Click on the popup to restore the window.
  • In the window that opens click Install.
  • Once the update is done click Close.
Your Adobe Reader is now up to date!

Hi,

I have not been able to see any malware, however the only way to be 100% sure that the PC is clean is probably to reformat it. Right now the chances are very very low that we over looked something, but they are not non-existant. I want you to be aware of this fact. If you have a different PC on which your credit card was used, taht may be the source of this, I would also look at that one closely.

As a final step I would like you to remove the programs we used:
Read those last few lines, in order to keep your pc safe and clean:
Please do the following to clean up your PC:
  • Delete the tools used during the disinfection:
    • Download OTC from the following mirrors and save it to your desktop:
    • Double click on Posted Image
    • Push the large "Cleanup" button.
    • Allow your system to reboot.
  • If OTC faild to remove all programs from your Desktop, please delete the rest manually.
  • Disable and Enable System Restore.
You can find instructions on how to disable and reenable system restore here:
    Windows ME System Restore Guide
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
    Windows Vista System Restore Guide

Note: You should only do this once, not on a regular basis!
You will not be able to restore computer to any earlier than today!

Please read these advices, in order to prevent reinfecting your PC:

  • Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
    • MVPs hosts file
A tutorial for MVPs hosts file can be found here. If you would like automatic updates you might want to take a look at HostMan host file manager. For more information on thehosts file, and what it can do for you, please consult the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  • Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holeswill allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  • Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  • Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variantsevery single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing :(.
