Hi,

I noticed this software attempting to install itself by flagging down a lot of spyware/viruses on my computer. I hit cancel to avoid installing the software but looks like my computer still got infected. I used MalwareBytes antimalware software which caught a few of the infections. I then used spybot s&d to get rid of some more infections. However my computer still misbehaves:

1. Firefox keeps redirecting links that i click on to junk sites.
2. When i put the laptop to sleep, it cannot resume from sleep, it is stuck at "Resuming Windows".
3. Cannot boot my laptop to the XP recovery partition.
4. I keep getting the error: generic host process for win32 crashing.
5. chkdsk run did not result in any corruptions fixed.
6. Used system recovery to roll back configuration couple of times, but of no use.
7. TDSS killer cannot run. It crashes on invocation.

I followed the procedure to post logs on this website, and i am enclosing the logs here. Also, after running GMER, it is very hard to reboot my laptop. Windows comes on succesfully only after a couple of retries. I also could not save the GMER logs successfully on the first run. The save attempt caused the gmer application to hang. I had to reboot the computer and rerun gmer and then i could save the log ok.

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Hi,

Thank you for helping me.

I ran combofix as per your instructions. Combofix asked for a system restart and i rebooted the system. On reboot, it did another scan before the windows launched and it generated a file named log and the combofix.txt (i assume). However after combofix exitted, windows did not resume startup as i would have expected. I now have just the wallpaper on my screen, no icons, no systray and the "start" button does not bring up the start menu.

At the same time my AV software (mcafee) decided to upgrade itself and prompted me to reboot. I had no choice but to reboot my laptop. Anyway it is back up now and i am attaching the combofix.txt here. Also, i am re-enabling mcafee.

Thanks,
-Raj

Do you have your desktop back now after the McAfee reboot?

Please do the following:

Please see if you can locate the first combofix log at c:\qoobox\combofix2.txt and post it, thanks

  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement
  • Click Continue The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and Save the file to your Desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start(or My Computer) > Control Panel and double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Click (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE, J2SE, Java™ SE or Java™ 6) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u25-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go back to your Control Panel(using Classic View) and click the Java icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button.

Thanks for the help. I don't see the firefox redirecting issue any more. However when the laptop goes to sleep/hibernates, on restart it is stuck at "Resuming Windows". I had also noticed that i could not boot the computer to the recovery partition.

Also, when i ran dds.scr, it crashed once, but the script seemed to continue and generated a dds.txt. Here is the DDS.txt:

the infection may have damaged your installation, do you have an installation disk?

please run the following:

Scan With RootKitUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers and Stealth
  • Uncheck the rest. then click OK
  • When prompted to Select Disks for Scan, make sure C:\ is checked and click OK
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File > Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in your next reply.

Note** you may get the following warning, just click OK and continue.

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

I did not get recovery CDs with my laptop. I was counting on the recovery partition to repair my installation. But i cannot boot to the recovery partition. The entire screen seems to get compressed horizontally into a small strip at the top of the screen. I ran the RKunhooker utility. Here is the report of the scan:

Hi,

It is a Toshiba Satellite L300 series. Processor Intel T3400 (2.16Ghz dual code, 320G hard drive). Most likely this is a customized laptop as I could not find the exact model no. beyond this and none of the L300 models on toshiba's website match my configuration.

I managed to create a recovery disk using the Toshiba utilities, but the recovery disk wants to reinstall the OS which means i will lose all my work (and have to reinstall tons of software from scratch). This is going to be my last resort.

Thanks,
-Raj

Well, you at least know that you can reformat if necessary, it would be a good idea to back up all your important documents and programs in case you ever have to do that down the road, but while the computer is operating well, you won't have a need to access the recovery partition at this time.

Are there any other outstanding issues?

The logs look clear of malware now.

Hi,

I guess the failure to resume is some damaged XP files, which i'll sort out myself.

I noticed one thing: When the Antimalware doctor first installed itself, i remember seeing a small safety shield icon in the systray which said downloading, and then a few minutes later the malware got installed. Now on bootup i see this small shield, but the download percentage is 0 and the icon goes away after a minute or so. I hope that does not mean anything.

This is the only issue left.

Thank you for your valuable help.

that may be windows update icon unless you are certain it is the malware icon.

I didn't see any indication of anything remaining, but run OTL and I'll see if there are any leftovers

None of the files are there, so it has nothing to launch, but if it is related it would be nice to get rid of it.

  • Download OTL and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon to run it.
  • Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top, make sure Standard output is selected.
  • Under the Extra Registry section, check Use SafeList
  • Download the following file scan.txt and save it to your Desktop. (You may need to right click on it and select "Save")
  • Double click inside the Custom Scan box at the bottom
  • A window will appear saying "Click Ok to load a custom scan from a file or Cancel to cancel"
  • Click the Ok button and navigate to the file scan.txt which we just saved to your desktop
  • Select scan.txt and click Open. Writing will now appear under the Custom Scan box
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time and post them in your topic

Some bad news. I left my browser on for some time and it created a new tab and directed me to a junk website (meevio or something like that). Also, i noticed an svchost.exe process was hogging cpu and i killed it. Here is the log of Extras.txt and OTL.txt
