Hi, I'm in networking and RF communications.

I've wrestled with my own bleeping computer problems. Usually I can catch viruses in the act, especially the fake virus protection programs, by bringing up windows task manager immediately after bootup before the virus gets a chance to load then tracking down the suspicious processes. Sometimes the legit virus checkers will flag it but not clean it, even though it says it has. After that, in safe mode, search and destroy through the system until you kill it.

But that seems like old school. With rootkits hiding in legit processes that block anti-virus programs, ugh...the bad guys have upped the game.

Do anti-virus programs suck, or are they so good that you only notice them when they fail?

The latter. So good you only notice them when they fail. Avast! is a great tool, usually even gets the rootkits.

What do you think you would find in Task Manager if you were not using an anti-virus?
