What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

This is my daughter computer and I am not really sure about this ....all i know for sure she has complained about the problem for some time now.
This I know for sure she had a cd writer that stopped working and it was removed from the system and now has only the DVD drive.
