My system is an old (2003) Pentium 4, 2.6ghz single processor. Replaced the hard drive a little under a year ago, running XP Pro, SP3.
It's on a Verizon FIOS wireless router with one other desktop and a laptop.
I was using AVG 9 Free as my malware protection.

I am not a power user, or even particularly competent. The last time I really understood my computer was my Amiga 500. This old computer is primarily used by my teen son for homework, youtube, and playing flash games and Battlefield 2142.

Sunday, he told me there was a virus warning. I told him not to click or accept anything, and I highlighted the windows and used alt-F4 to shut them down. AVG hadn't detected anything, and I discovered google was redirecting when I tried to look into making sure its definitions were up to date.
When I tried to use ctl-alt-del to bring up task manager, it opened and closed immediately.

I rebooted into safe mode with networking and downloaded malwarebytes to try to get a second program to scan. It found an infection and announced it cleaned. The computer seemed okay. However, when I rebooted out of safe mode, I noticed that instead of the two users normally offered (named after my wife and son, the former with admin priviliges), it offered "Administrator" and wife. I was stupid and assumed that it had reverted somehow, and I tried all the passwords I would normally put on something like that,to no avail. I finally selected wife, and got in.

The system was running very slow, but I was now able to use task manager. I noticed a svchost using 90% of the CPU. I brought up the services on control panel and tried turning off everything nonessential or suspicious to see if that got to it, but no dice.

Another symptom is that the browser will open to a advertising page. The only way to close that window is from task manager; alt-F4 has no effect.

Monday, I googled on the other computer, found your compufix, downloaded that and ran it. Without starting a thread or asking for help. Mea culpa.
It asked me to disable AVG. I could not disable AVG free to its satisfaction, but since AVG had failed me, I decided to just uninstall it. Two hours later, I had failed. It would not uninstall, so I simply deleted everything. Or nearly everything, there was a DLL that wouldn't go away, so I downloaded a file specifically to kill that DLL. I'm sure I left AVG tracks all over my registry, but I'm afraid of my registry and don't edit it.
Then I ran combofix. It detected the ghost of AVG, but agreed to run anyway. It seemed to work like a charm. It announced it found a rootkit problem, it rebooted, did its thing, and cured my computer completely. For an hour or so. I did save the log.

Then google started redirecting again. Since Malwarebytes, as near as I could tell, only scanned on demand, I downloaded Avast! and installed it. It didn't help, either. I also installed Google Chrome, hoping that at least whatever was redirecting my IE browser wouldn't affect Chrome. It does.
I rebooted into safe mode and ran combofix from that. No dice. I rebooted into normal mode, ran combofix one more time, since when running it from safe mode it told me that it had updated itself, and I held out hope that whatever magic makes this stuff go away was more magic now.

I have now seen the error of my ways and come for help from the competent. I have followed your instructions, except that I cannot turn my windows firewall on. The service will not start; I've tried from the security center, the icon in the control panel, and I've tried turning the service on directly from the service list. I am denied access.

To be clear, the false warnings about a virus (I'm sorry, I don't recall what it was) have not recurred; the redirecting of browser results, the opening of a new browser window to an ad, and the appearance of the bogus 'adminstrator' user account are still happening. This site is redirected as well, and I was only able to reach it by going into IE tools and fiddling with the security settings. I could not open an account from this computer - the browser had problems with the form (the bit at the end where you type in the words that appear); I had to create the account on my working computer, then log in from here. I had to reset the security options to default to allow the downloads.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

FINAL NOTE: I tried submitting this from the affected computer, and got an error message; I copied the necessary files and submitted from another computer.

Roger, Gringo, I appreciate the help. Unless you tell me otherwise, I'll be very detailed about what I've done, since I have no idea what is significant and what is not.
Since I put up my initial request for help, I powered the system down and it has been off until just now. In following the instructions for making my initial post, I had already downloaded defogger and DDS and had them on desktop; I ran them again per your instructions and the logs are pasted below, but if I should have deleted the programs and re-downloaded them, please advise and I'll do so.
* The initial instructions had me attach the logs; if I understand you correctly, you want all logs pasted into this dialog box.
Also, I am interacting with you on a second computer. I downloaded rkunhooker on this, transferred it to a thumbdrive, loaded it on the problem computer, ran it (after defogger and dds), and put all the logs on the thumb for transfer back to this computer. When I submitted my initial trouble ticket, I got an error message when I tried to submit a new topic or a reply.

Hello

you did very well!!

after you have completed these steps try to past the reports with the sick computer (it is an indication of the infection)

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

AVG right now is very hard to shut down long enough to run our scans and is actively going after some of our tools - for this reason we are going to have to remove it until we are finished

I would like you to uninstall AVG and run their AVG removal tool - 32 bit

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Before I try to follow your instructions, one piece of background: I tried to remove AVG a couple of weeks ago. Uninstall did not work - I tried twice, and I deleted the files, having to download a tool to get rid of one of the dlls that would not go. I didn't touch the registry, and I'm sure AVG is all over it.

Should I continue by starting with their AVG removal tool?

Okay, submitting this from the infected computer, knock on wood.

I ran the AVG removal tool, 32 bit. It rebooted the computer, and when it rebooted, a balloon in the lower right appeared "Windows system effor. A duplicate name exists on the network." The AVG software left a log, which I can provide if needed.

I shut down my Avast using the instructions on your site.

I then deleted the old combofix, installed a fresh one, and ran it. It gave me the warning "Combofix has detected the following real-time scanner(s) to be active: antivirus: AVG Anti-Virus free" and prompted me to close any security software running. I used task manager at that point to see if any processes labeled AVG were running; there were none, so I closed task manager and clicked continue.

I got "Antivirus: AVG Anti-virus free The above real time scanner(s) are still active but combofix shall continue..."

It notified me "Rootkit is detected" followed by "Combofix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot."

I then received a message "A duplicate name exists on the network."

Combofix appeared to run without incident and the log is pasted below.

Hello

It looks like the rootkit is still active. I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Ok, ran TDSSKiller. The first notification read "rootkit.win32.tdss.tdl4" and the second read "cured reboot now"

After rebooting, I remembered that I had not turned my Avast back on after disabling it for combofix, so I re-enabled it and updated it from within the program.

I ran google to see if it was still redirecting; it does not seem to be. Not related to the virus issue, but to make sure you know everything that is done on the computer while troubleshooting, I noticed that google toolbar was on my browser and I used add/remove program to remove it.

I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = <local>

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Okay, created the script text and dropped it in combofix. I disabled Avast again. When combofix ran, it prompted me to update to a newer version - I selected "no." It also still says it detects AVG Antivirus Free.

After running program, I don't see any problems with computer. There is an almost subliminal flickering line that moves up from about the center of the screen to about 3/4 of the way up, and the color ofthe display seems to wash out just a bit with the same frequency - you have to look really hard to notice it - and that has been there for quite some time. Did not think of it before, I don't really notice it anymore and have assumed it was a monitor issue. None of the major issues - the virus prompt, redirects, phantom account, lockout of task manager- is obvious now. I have not tried to restart the firewall service yet.

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.
[/list]
Your Java is out of date.

Roger. Uninstalled the adobe reader, installed the new one (that included running adobe download manager), updated Java, cleared the Java cache, and ran TFC, which did reboot the system.

Ran MBAM, which found one infection, and had the program remove it.

Ran Hijack This.

No change noted in computer behavior.

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AppleSyncNotifier] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\AppleSyncNotifier.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

NOTE**You can research each of those lines >here< and see if you want to keep them or not
just copy the name between the brakets and paste into the search space
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelliPoint]

Eset Online Scanner
