Hi there,

I'm new to these forums, and I'm posting (from a clean PC) regarding an issue I'm experiencing running my laptop, which appears to be infected with a TDL4 rootkit. The laptop runs Windows Vista, and in the past two days has begun to cause Google redirects, as well as randomly crashing to a BSOD on occasion. Before finding this forum, I installed Microsoft Security Essentials and ran both a MalwareBytes and HitmanPro scan; all three seemed to indicate possible rootkit infection, but could not adequately clean the computer.

As requested, here are my DDS logs:

Unfortunately, I tried to run GMER and during its scan the computer crashes to a BDOS and reboots, so I cannot add a GMER log at the moment.

I know that anyone looking at this thread is a volunteer and that there are a lot of demands on your time, so I just wanted to give a big thank you in advance to anyone coming across this topic and offering their help!

3) Problems: DeFogger ran successfully, but did not ask me to reboot my machine. I then closed the DeFogger application window with the X button in the top right corner, and the machine crashed to a BSOD almost immediately.

Upon reboot, a cd/dvd program (MagicDVD) was running, so I manually exited the program and re-ran DeFogger to disable emulation drivers just in case they had enabled themselves; I hope this was correct. I did not close the DeFogger application window this time, and was able to continue on to the other programs.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

2) Problems:

I disabled all anti-virus software I had and ran ComboFix. It nearly reached the end of its progress bar when the computer suddenly crashed to a BSOD (with the error code STOP: 0x0000008E). I had to reboot the computer and run the program again.

3) How computer runs now:

I haven't experienced any redirects or crashes at the moment. I don't know if that means the computer is clean for sure, but it seems better so far.

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

On a side note, after running TDSSKiller, there have been two or three random pop-ups appearing through Internet Explorer even though I'm not actively using IE at all - the windows just open themselves on my computer. I don't know if they are symptomatic of the rootkit infection, or just coming through because my firewalls/anti-virus are turned off. Just thought I'd mention it.

Also, Hitman Pro is on my laptop and keeps running itself when the computer reboots (when Combofix causes it to restart for example). I stop it every time, but to my knowledge I've never added it to my startup programs or asked it to run on startup. Should I remove it altogether? I don't want it to interfere with the cleaning process.

Greetings

yes go ahead and uninstall hitman

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

File::
c:\windows\system32\sti_civ.dll
c:\windows\system32\KBDCZ19.dll
c:\users\Alex\AppData\Local\Btoqu.bin
c:\users\Default User\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\ceoxr.exe

FireFox::
FF - ProfilePath - c:\users\Alex\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ib2ircha.default\
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http - 127.0.0.1
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http_port - 60424
FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.type - 1

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:60424

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

2) Problems:

I had no problems running ComboFix this time.

3) Current status:

The computer seems to be doing better - I still seem to have no redirects while browsing the internet, and I haven't seen any random pop-ups from Internet Explorer either. I have not experienced any crashes.

Unfortunately, when I bought the laptop it came with Vista already installed and there was no installation or recovery CD included. I assume trying to create a recovery disc from my machine, if it's infected still, wouldn't work?

Is there any other step I can take in place of this, or anything else to do?
