I have a Samsung N130 Netbook running Win XP Pro.

The system boots up and loads the desktop, but then the start menu, taskbar and desktop freezes. The arrow icon has a permanent egg-timer next to it. I can move the cursor but nothing responds to clicking.

I don't recall making any changes to the system recently, although I will have downloaded some software (no P2P or anything high-riski as far as I'm aware). I can only assume it is malware.

I ran the ESET online scaner which did report a suspected Trojan which I removed. Sorry I didn't write down the name of it.

But the problem still persists.

I have ran a full Malwarebytes scan and found nothing.

I have run out of ideas! If you can help I'd be very grateful.

Thanks

Steve

I ran Combofix instead and have attached the log.

I ran the ESET scanner again and it found the same file. I've attached the log. Thanks!Attached File  ESET log.txt   957bytes   3 downloads

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Please take note:

  • If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know.
  • If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • If you are unable to perform the steps we have recommended please try one more time and if unsuccessful alert us of such and we will design an alternate means of obtaining the necessary information.
  • If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.
  • If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
  • Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.
Help us help you. If HelpBot replies, you MUST follow step 1 in its reply so we know you need help.

Hi

Thanks for getting back to me. I was about to reformat the HD.

The problem is still live.

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.101209-1647)

I don't know if it's 32 bit or 64 bit. I don't have the original Windows CD. DDS and GMER logs below.

Wasn't able to disable CD emulator (Daemon Tools Lite) as I can only run in safe mode.

Hi Sempai

Yes I could still use help, but I've ordered a new Win XP CD, so if I haven't heard anything by Tuesday I'm reformatting HD.

The PC is starting up now in diagnostic mode. It's running all the services and start up programs, but still freezes when I start up in normal mode.

You run a fantastic service guys, a real lifesaver, but when you're swamped maybe you could give people a warning? I've spent a lot of time on this forum, when I could have gone elsewhere.

Best wishes

Ribsburg

Hi Ribsburg,

We are really trying our best to reply to everyone as fast as we can, there are so many like you asking for help and only few of us but no on is ignore here.

You should not be using Combofix unless instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is a powerful tool intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert", NOT for general public or personal use. Combofix was never meant to be used as a general purpose malware scanner like SuperAntispyware or Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer.

=============================

Please delete your copy of Combofix (do not uninstall) and then download a new copy.

Reboot your computer in safe mode and run it from there, kindly monitor it while running and when combofix reboots the computer during it's run... make sure to start it again in safe mode to complete the process.

Download Combofix (by Subs) from any of the links below, make sure that you save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

  • It's important to temporary disable your anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. See HERE
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.

*It's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.
*The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
*This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures. If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • When prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).

Important notes:

  • Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
  • ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.
  • ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
  • Please do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may call it to stall.
  • ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper. See HERE.
