I've noticed several recent posts that discuss the exact problem I'm having. I got the Windows Recovery virus, and I successfully removed it from my computer. However, I still have ads running in the background, and I have a re-direct problem when using Internet Explorer. (My start menu and desktop have been altered as well.) May I please get some help to resolve these issues? (I see other users posting logs for you to review, but I will wait for you to direct me to do so.) Thank you in advance for your help!

Before doing anything if you have not already done so, you should back up all your important documents, personal data files and photos to a CD or DVD drive as some infections may render your computer unbootable during or before the disinfection process. The safest practice is not to backup any files with the following file extensions: exe, .scr, .ini, .htm, .html, .php, .asp, .xml, .zip, .rar, .cab as they may be infected.
Please follow these instructions: How to remove Google Redirects or the TDSS, TDL3, Alureon rootkit using TDSSKiller
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • When the program opens, click the Start Scan button.
  • Any objects found, will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure...do not change it.

    Posted Image
  • Click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.<- Important!!

    Posted Image
  • If 'Suspicious' objects are detected, you will be given the option to Skip or Quarantine. Skip will be the default selection. Leave it as such for now.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.
-- For any files detected as 'Suspicious' (except those identified as Forged to be cured after reboot) get a second opinion by submitting to Jotti's virusscan or VirusTotal. In the "File to upload & scan" box, browse to the location of the suspicious file and submit (upload) it for scanning/analysis.

Step 7 instructs you to scan your computer using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Don't forget to check for database definition updates through the program's interface (preferable method) before scanning.

Malwarebytes' may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • After completing the scan, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab .
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows the database version and your operating system.
  • Exit Malwarebytes' when done.
Note: If Malwarebytes' encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally will prevent Malwarebytes' from removing all the malware.

-- Some types of malware will target Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and other security tools to keep them from running properly. If that's the case, please refer to the suggestions provided in For those having trouble running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as you may need to rename it or use RKill by Grinler.

Can you post the results of the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan?

Also let me know how your computer is running and if there are any more signs of infection...strange audio ads, unwanted pop-ups, security alerts, or browser redirects.

I will post the scan results this evening. The ads are gone. But, I'm having lots of other problems that all seem to have one commonality. My desktop is missing several icons, and my internet explorer shows that my favorites are blank. And, my machine no longer asks for my password when I log on. I'm not a technical expert and will defer to your opinion... but, it appears as if my machine is logged on as "someone else" rather than me. What do I need to do in order to get the log on screen during the boot process that allows me to tell the machine that it's ME who's logging on? (By the way, thank you so much for your help!!!)

It was probably the malware altering your settings. What OS are you using?

For XP, press the WINKEY + R keys on the keyboard or click Posted Image > Run..., and in the Open dialog box, type: Userpasswords2
Click OK or press Enter.
Check the box for "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer."
Click Apply and Ok.

I have Windows Vista.
During the boot process, I also get an error that says HP Advisor failed.
And, I get a popup box that says "data is already in use".
I made an error in my previous message... it DOES ask me for my password. But, all the problems I described in my last post still exist.

Here is the log you requested:

Please download unhide.exe by Grinler and save to your Desktop. Double-click on the file to run the tool.

After running it, all files will have the "hidden" attribute removed. This includes files that are normally hidden by the operating system and any files you may have intentionally hidden. The tool is designed not to remove hidden attribute for system files. When done you will need to restore the hidden attributes to those files manually. To do that, open Windows Explorer, go to Tools > Folder Options > View and make that change there.

The issues with HP Advisor failing and the message that says "data is already in use" both appear to be related to Advisor. Reading through the HP forums, the most common solution is to download and reinstall the software.

HP Advisor Application Update

However, some folks still report issues after doing that so you may need to Contact HP Support directly.

Thanks for the tips with HP Advisor.

Will the "unhide.exe" file fix these issues:
My favorites (in Internet Explorer) are gone. (I can see my favorites folder in windows explorer and can access them by clicking there; but, when I click "favorites" in internet explorer, nothing appears.)
Many of the programs (as an example, "Accessories") in my start menu are gone.
Many of the icons on my desktop are gone.

Does the unhide file fix these problems, or will I need to do something else?

You had the Windows Recovery rogue. A side effect of The HDD Defrag family OF ROGUES is to hide files on fixed disks so running the tool is part of the fix. See step 17 in Removal Instructions for Windows Recovery.

Some types of malware will alter various settings on your computer and after cleaning the infection you may have to reset them to defaults.

Thought you might like to know that the "unhide" command also fixed the HP Advisor problem, and I no longer get the "data in use" error. I believe all my problems are fixed now. I don't know who you are, but I wish I could shake your hand and offer sincere thanks for your help. YOU ARE GREAT!!!! Thank you thank you so much for helping me!!!!!

You're welcome.

If there are no more problems or signs of infection, you should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been backed up, renamed and saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Posted Image > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name, then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to Posted Image > Run... and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "Ok". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
  • Click the "More Options" tab, then click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
  • Click Yes, then click Ok.
  • Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.
